Atlantis In South America: The Evidence

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Atlantis (in Greek, Ἀτλαντὶς νῆσος, “island of Atlas”) is a legendary island first mentioned in Plato’s dialogues Timaeus and Critias, written about 360 BC. According to Plato, Atlantis was a naval power lying “in front of the Pillars of Hercules” that conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa 9,000 years before the time of Solon, or approximately 9600 BC. After a failed attempt to invade Athens, Atlantis sank into the ocean “in a single day and night of misfortune”.

Scholars dispute whether and how much Plato’s story or account was inspired by older traditions. In Critias, Plato claims that his accounts of ancient Athens and Atlantis stem from a visit to Egypt by the legendary Athenian lawgiver Solon in the 6th century BC. In Egypt, Solon met a priest of Sais, who translated the history of ancient Athens and Atlantis, recorded on papyri in Egyptian hieroglyphs, into Greek. Some scholars argue Plato drew upon memories of past events such as the Thera eruption or the Trojan War, while others insist that he took inspiration from contemporary events like the destruction of Helike in 373 BC or the failed Athenian invasion of Sicily in 415–413 BC.

Plato’s description exactly fits South America, asserts the author of Atlantis in Bolivia,  because if there is no sunken continent in the Atlantic Ocean, then the continent opposite the Pillars of Hercules must be America, and we can specifically say South America was intended because Plato tells us that in the centre of the “island” continent and midway along its longest side was a perfectly level, rectangular shaped plain which was high above the level of the sea and enclosed by mountains.

The city in turn lay on the level rectangular plain, five miles from the sea which is an inland sea and according to Plato the whole region rose sheer out of the ocean to a great height on that side of the continent. Thus we have both a lost city of Atlantis as well as a lost continent of Atlantis.

Model of the island continent with the rectangular level plain arrowed.

The translation from Plato by Desmond Lee tells us “in the centre of the island near the sea was a plain which was enclosed by mountains, and the region as a whole was high above the level of the sea. The plain was uniformly flat, rectangular in shape and lay midway along the longest side of the continent.”

Therefore: It was not the continent of Atlantis which sank into the sea, but the island capital of the same name, built around a volcanic island which sank into the inland sea of Lake Poopo which exists on the edge of the rectangular plain presently called the Bolivian Altiplano.

Modern satellite mapping shows the plain, now called the Altiplano to be of rectangular configuration, perfectly level, enclosed on all sides by mountains and these mountains contained the metals which Plato told us about, namely gold, silver, copper, tin and the mysterious Orichalcum” (an alloy of gold and copper which occurs only in the Andes) and which Plato said were used to plate the walls of the circular city

. The words “Atl” and “Antis” are themselves of native America origins meaning “water” and “copper” respectively and the plain is subject to earthquakes and floods such as Plato said sank the city in a single day and night of rainfall.

Sinking into the Sea People sometimes say; “How can Atlantis be in the Andes when it is supposed to have sunk into the sea?” We must remember that Atlantis according to Plato was on a level plain which was “high above the level of the sea and surrounded by mountains”. Yet the city was on a level plain and only 5 miles from the sea and connected to the sea by a canal. The only way the city can be on a level plain and 5 miles from the sea and yet at the same time “high above the level of the sea” is if there are in fact two seas, that is here, the Ocean Sea enclosing the island continent and the inland sea adjacent to the city. So the canal which Plato said took ships from the sea to the city was not a canal from the Atlantic Ocean or the Pacific Ocean, but a canal from the nearby lake which is so huge that it is in fact an inland sea called Lake Poopo, which in turn is connected to another vast inland sea called Lake Titicaca to the north. In fact the entire plain has been periodically submerged beneath the sea ie it became a giant inland sea at various dates going back thousands of years succeeded by dry periods. And the Earthquakes and Floods which Plato described are absolutely typical of the region.  See more at http://www.atlantisbolivia.org/

Earthquakes were a major factor in the destruction of Atlantis

This region of the Altiplano lies in a major earthquake zone and earthquakes are still a major problem for peoples in the area.

Above, left, the nearby port of Arica before 1868, view looking north; above right the port of Arica after the earthquake of 1868, view looking south toward El Morro.

After destruction by earthquakes, there may be nothing left at all of ancient cities unlike shown in contemporary cinema where sunken cities lie more or less intact on the bottom of the sea!

Above, left, hills with terraces destroyed by earthquakes east of lake Poopo.

Below, hill with ringed channels or terraces destroyed by earthquakes on the northeast side.

Above, it can easily be seen how the entire northeastern sector has been destroyed by earthquakes.

The possible existence of a genuine Atlantis was discussed throughout classical antiquity, but it was usually rejected and occasionally parodied by later authors. Alan Cameron states: “It is only in modern times that people have taken the Atlantis story seriously; no one did so in antiquity”. The Timaeus remained known in a Latin rendition by Calcidius through the Middle Ages, and the allegorical aspect of Atlantis was taken up by Humanists in utopian works of several Renaissance writers, such as Francis Bacon’s New Atlantis and Thomas More’s Utopia. Atlantis inspires today’s literature, from science fiction to comic books to films. Its name has become a byword for any and all supposed advanced prehistoric lost civilizations.

Think Atlantis was off the southeastern coast of N. America in the Atlantic. Hence “Atlanta” Georgia and the “Atlantic” Ocean…. Just swap the “C” for an “S” in Atlantic and what do you have? It may be a mystery to us, but I’m sure those who suppress the knowledge and distort history know exactly about Atlantis’ whereabouts and true story. There was definitely something signifigant about Atlantis, maybe something bad for us, but good for them… Possibly the “Old New Order”? or something that if we had previous knowledge of, we may better recognize just why they are doing the things they’re doing. But sadly, they can keep out the masses from wanting the knowledge and information of Atlantis, by simply with-holding the actual location of Atlantis. This provides them with yet another thing, in the vast list of things we can spend time argueing about and to be divided over,… “its here, no it was there” , “Its just a story, no its true”. .. All the while diverting our attention away from the more significant aspects of the Atlantean society, as we’re more focused on “where the shooter was, versus who the actual shooter was” and “what caused the towers to fall, VS who brought the towers down and why?… In case you haven’t noticed, they tend to do this a lot.

Excellent work. I have come to similar conclusions – it now seems like common sense. I have read that the forefathers of America had plans to resurrect Atlantis. This was apparently one of their common goals in freemasonry. I have an idea that the Atlanteans were rather well educated philosophers and this was in direct contrast to the ideology of God brought over from Europe. Basically, it is much easier to control a population with fear of God than to deal with an educated and philosophical population. This led to the all out destruction of the relics that were left on the continent when the Europeans arrived. We have lost our history thanks to people that seek to exploit and manipulate us. It’s OK though, if this is the case then keep educating yourself and Atlantis shall live on. Remember that a philosophical ideology requires many philosophical minds.
