Norway’s Amazing Island-Linking Scenic Route-The Atlantic Road (Photos And Video)
(N.Morgan) The Atlantic Road is one of the most interesting and innovative highways I’ve ever seen. This wonder was honored in 2005 as Norway’s Construction of the Year. I can see why!
A little history: The Atlantic Road (Atlantic Ocean Road) is an 8.3 kilometer long section of County Road 64, running through an archipelago and passing by Hustadvika, an unsheltered part of the Norwegian Sea. The structure is built on several small islands and skerries that are connected by causeways, viaducts and eight bridges. The longest and most prominent of the bridges is the 260 meter long Storseisundet Bridge.
Besides the details you really don’t need to told how beautiful and absolutely stunning this is, just look for yourself!

One of the interesting facts about this roadway, was that it was originally going to be a railway line, in the 20th century. A railway on the sea, what a sight that would have been. But, the idea was abandoned and was replaced in the 1970′s with the idea of a road. Construction began August 1st, 1983. and was completed July 7th, 1989. In spite of the 12 hurricanes that hampered its progress.
