ISON LIVES? Photo Captured By Mars Curiosity (Video)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

What appears to be a UFO streaking across the sky has been found In Mars Curiosity Rover SOL 504 Photo. At first it is barely noticeable but as you zoom in it begins to look more and more like a comet. If it is not a comet, then what is it?

Could it be the remnant of Comet ISON accidently captured? The date of the photo is 2014-01-05 23:26:37 UTC. You be the judge!

(A little hint about Youtube. The video definition on Youtube seems to be set at 360p by default. You can change the definition to 720p HD by selecting the gear icon on the bottom of the player.)

According to Wikipedia “Comet ISON was at first suspected to have disintegrated on 28 November 2013 (the day of perihelion passage) from the Sun’s heat and tidal forces. However, later that day CIOC (NASA Comet ISON Observing Campaign) members discovered a coma-like feature, suggesting a small fragment of it may have survived perihelion. On 29 November 2013, the coma dimmed to an apparent magnitude of 5.”

By the end of 30 November 2013, the coma had further faded to below naked-eye visibility at magnitude 7. On 1 December, the coma continued to fade even further as it finished traversing the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory’s view. On 2 December 2013, the CIOC announced that Comet ISON had fully disintegrated, though NASA continues to investigate the possibility that an inactive fragment could have survived.  The Hubble Space Telescope failed to detect fragments of ISON on 18 December 2013.” This photo was captured 2 weeks later on January 05, 2014.

See video description on Youtube for link to original NASA photo.

It seems that Comet ISON was a bit of an underdog that everyone wants to believe that some how it survived in some form. This could possibly be the proof the ISON supporters need.I would have no idea if ISON, had it survived would have been view-able from Mars on that date.

      • Fat Redneck

I wouldn’t know how to figure it out since ISON had mostly burnt up and most likely had lost speed. But the date of the photo would more than likely fall in the ball park. Somebody with a little more knowledge enlighten us!

There is a left and a right hazcam. It takes images with both cameras so that a stereo view can be generated to judge distance. The “comet” is not in the other image from the other camera. Check out the video below for the proof:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_profilepage&v=RkH6Rr38Lvo

So, it is most probably an image artifact.

BTW, no one has imaged ISON since its perihelion when it turned to dust. The last guy to try failed, and he was at one of the best locations in the world and used some pretty good equipment that is much better than Curiosity’s hazcam. Not even a hint of the comet was seen. If he could not do it with long exposures of many minutes, then I doubt the hazcam on Curiosity could see it with just a snapshot image in the daytime. lol

I checked out your video. THE ONLY REASON you can not see it in both pictures is because of the perspective of the one camera. It is rotated in such a way that the part of the Rover in the upper right of the photo COVERS the sky where the “UFO” is. Look at it over and over. No rocket scientist stuff needed to figure this out. It is there just blocked by the Rover. Your own overlays in your video even show this! But you ignore this fact?

        • InLikeFlint

BS! It is visible at the 42 sec mark in one image but not the other. The overlay proves it should have been visible in both cameras. You must have been blind not to see this.

        • InLikeFlint

BTW, in case you missed the news, ISON is dead and gone. If we couldn’t spot it from Earth with astronomical cameras and long exposures, what makes you think the Curiosity rover could take a “snapshot” of it in the daytime? Get real! lol

        • Extremum Spiritum News

Fact it is not in BOTH images because one of the images the rover obstructs that portion of the sky. Your own overlays in your own video shows the object in one image is obscured by the second image. I don’t care how big your monitor is. You are WRONG!! It is like covering your right eye and then cover your left. You are going to see things from one eye that you do not see from the other. My bedroom door is open covering half of my clock. If I cover my right eye I can see 3/4 of my clock. If I cover my left eye my clock disappears entirely and all I can see is the door. This is the same thing happening in the two images that you are using. You can plainly see that part of the rover it’s self is covering where the object is in the other photo.

If the so-called “object” was in the sky, it would be at infinity, so it would not have moved much between the images. At the 42 second mark in the video, it shows that the object is in one camera but not the othe and the images are aligned to account for the different perspectives of each camera. So, THAT RULES OUT IT BEING A REAL OBJECT! Its an artifact. Only close-by objects would have moved, but not something hundreds of thousands of miles away. So, your logic fails the test.

BTW, the video is not mine. I just linked to it. I see you had the same argument with the creator of the video at YouTube. But, you didn’t listen to him so I’m not going to try and convince you since you already have your mind made up. Sorry, but in my opinion, you are wrong. Doubly wrong since ISON disintegrated a long time ago and is no more.

        • xxJTxx

Im not in favor of either arguement because truth is neither one of you can prove beyond a shadow of doubt ISON died or survived the perihelion. 2 things are for sure though. 1. Even if ISON did survive the effect it had/is having on our planet is none. People need to retire the subject. it was not a bright firework show as predicted, nor did it bring about the end of times.
          2. I’ve seen thousands of artifacts in pictures. this pic does not fit the description what so ever. If i had to make a guess id say it was nothing more than space debri burning up in mars atmosphere. The fact it cant be seen from both angles is a bit puzzling. to contrary most scientist dont actually know as much as they claim. your camera can be off by a fraction of a degree and it will change your perspective. especially if you are relying on two different cameras from two different angles to produce one image of a moving object. “inlikeflint” should understand what a challenge this can be and how easy it is to mess up being an astronomer

          But I did!

considering the fact that “little Johnny” is using etremespiritum news gmail account, its only logical your are in fact posting with two accounts, and so yes, you did change your name.

NASA knows its out there, that’s why its still being monitored. i wouldn’t worry about it as a whole though as its path is far from earth. When it broke up into many sized debris most of it followed the path predicted by NASA. Some debris may have spread out to effect Earth and hence the many fiery objects people are seeing over the last month or so. Some people here will say its not anything to do with Ison, but nobody really knows for sure.

One thing for sure is there are many sightings of objects and some very interesting weather we are having, definitely not normal. Watch (strange events of 2013) to get a better picture of whats going on.

      • InLikeFlint

The fiery objects we’re seeing over the last month or so? Where have you been? Fireball meteors have been increasing in frequency for the last few years. Didn’t you see the graph showing huge increases since 2010?

        /contributor/upload/190814/images/fireball_increase_AMS_data_201%5B1%5D.jpg

        • Extremum Spiritum News

Yes but what does that have to do with the video? I’m not saying it’s ISON but the probability does exist.

        • InLikeFlint

It has nothing to do with you or your video, Extremum. I was replying to friends2you and his claim that “fiery debris,” as he called it, were just a recent phenomenon of the last month or so. As you can see from the graph, fireballs have been on the increase for several years.

Whether it is or is not dead, gone, dust, there. my? Is why was it referenced in a movie called melt down says of destruction 6 years before it was ever discovered?
