(N.Morgan) An amazingly well preserved 3,600 year old mummy was found on Feb 13, 2014, in the ancient city of Luxor. Mohammed Ibrahim said that this was such a rare find due to the condition of the wooden sarcophagus. It was unearthed by Spanish archeologists and dates back to 1600 BC, when the Pharonic 17th Dynasty reigned.

Ibrahim added that the exact identity of the mummy will be studied, noting that it was discovered by a Spanish mission in collaboration with the Egyptian antiquities ministry. Head of the Antiquities Department Ali Al-Asfar also stated that the two-meter sarcophagus still bears its original coloring and writings. The development came as Egypt’s top prosecutor referred three German citizens to a criminal court on charges of smuggling and damaging antiquities and six Egyptians for acting as their accessories.

Hisham Barakat said authorities issued arrest warrants for the German thieves, who fled to their country after the alleged incident. He said Egyptian authorities would communicate with their German counterparts to restore the pieces they say were taken last April under the pretext of use for research.
