HOLLAND — Genesee County Tea Party member Brenda Battle Jordan drove in from Flint to protest government giveaways of taxpayer money at Thursday’s groundbreaking of the new $303 million LG Chem lithium ion battery plant, attended by President Barack Obama.

“The government has to get control of spending and start balancing the budget. Michigan is hurting for jobs, but the giveaway of our tax dollars on projects that may not ever occur or produce jobs has got to stop,” Brenda Battle Jordan said.********Update..

Two years ago, when President Obama visited the LG Chem battery plant in Holland, it was hailed as part of the transformation of Michigan to a “green economy.”

The battery plant, which supplies batteries for the Chevy Volt, got $151 million from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Today, $133 million of that $151 million has been spent, but since April, the company’s 200 workers have been on ”rolling furloughs” because the electric vehicle market has failed to blossom as promised by many.

In 2010, the plant was projected to create 443 new jobs within five years. Those projections have been shelved as the company says it can’t predict when the furloughs will stop for its current employees.

“Ultimately, market conditions and demand for lithium-ion batteries are going to determine when the company is going to be able to launch production and grow,” said LG Chem Spokesman Randy Boileau. “The company has said the Holland facility will play an important role in its global strategy for the batteries.”

The Holland battery plant was one of two high-profile green projects heavily subsidized by the government that drew presidential attention, but now are struggling.

A123 Systems, which has a lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Livonia, received $249.1 million in federal government money. It laid off employees and its future was in doubt until China recently invested $465 million in the company.

The electric vehicle market in the U.S. has not taken off as some have hoped.

GM has sold 13,497 Chevy Volt s through August this year, or about .001 percent of the total 9.7 million cars and light trucks sold in the first nine months of 2012, according to Autodata Corp. GM sold 2,831 Volts in August of 2012, up from 302 sold in August of 2011.

“Michigan and the federal government deemed that electric car batteries were the future and spent hundreds of millions of tax dollars trying to make it so,” said James Hohman, a fiscal policy analyst with the Mackinac Center for Public Policy. “Policymakers shouldn’t waste taxpayer dollars on the industry du jour; they should level the playing field.”

The Holland battery plant also was approved for up to $100 million in state tax credits.

by Rev. Austin Miles CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (9/11/12)

When the DNC came to Charlotte, area churches, 100 of them, offered hospitality, not knowing how much the Dems hate God and would actually boo God at the convention. They had no idea how that hatred would be directed at them and their churches.

The Sunday before the DNC, over 9000 people had come together to pray for the convention. Then, wanting to extend hospitality to the visitors to their city, 56 of the churches set out to “Adopt-a-Delegation.”

They put together gift baskets featuring Carolina Pralines and a letter welcoming them to the city and offering assistance in transportation, childcare or spiritual matters.

      According to writer, Todd Starnes,

The DNC banned the churches from distributing the gift baskets to delegates because, DNC said, the congregations hold values that are contrary to the party platform.

      Read that carefully.

David Benham, one of the organizers of the outreach said, “We were just trying to display Southern hospitality.” DNC officials, however, conveyed to city leaders that the Christians would not be allowed to present their gift baskets.

Even the Charlotte Mayor’s office jumped in to tell the churches not to participate, saying that their views on women’s rights are contrary to the platform.

That’s right..the same platform that booed God later.

Benham then asked if they could send welcome letters to the delegates.

Again, the DNC refused, because, they said, “The churches hold pro-life values.”

The baskets did not contain a single political or pro-life message. They just wanted to give them regional candles and a welcome letter. The DNC refused to return numerous phone calls seeking comment.

      But it gets worse.

When a gathering of 200 Muslims showed up to pray for the convention, the Dems welcomed them with open arms and the liberal media gave extensive national coverage.

It is ironic that this day, in the shadow of that Islamic prayer event, we commemorate the greatest tragedy in American History, when Muslims attacked America on September 11, 2001, brutally killing thousands.of innocent people. Muslims who publicly state their hatred of our country with fierce determination to kill us all and put America under Sharia Law, are welcomed by the Democratic Party while Christians are pushed out of sight like criminals because they respect life and hold family values.

These are the same democrats who want you to vote them into office to direct the United States of America and every life from beginning to end.

It is obvious that we must not let this happen.

Our thanks to Rev. Ed Berkey (retired) who alerted us to this story. Austin Miles

General Motors reached another Obama milestone when they announced late on a Friday afternoon that they were suspending production of the Obama-inspired Chevy Volt for five weeks due to lack of demand
      Sunday, March 4, 2012 2:33

Here is another great Obama success story using our taxpayer dollars. Isn’t it just wonderful when the Government and the Union are making the decisions in running an Auto company. They can do anything when they have unlimited access to the taxpayer dollar well to dip into non-stop. Our country is broke and spending is out of control and they just can’t figure out where to stop the spending. I’m sure most of us could have figured out how and where to stop the spending months ago! Obama does not want the spending to stop. He is destroying our economy and touting it as a win. We must vote him out in 2012 unless you want to live in a Socialist country. Cathy

      From Townhall Daily:

General Motors reached another Obama milestone when they announced late on a Friday afternoon that they were suspending production of the Obama-inspired Chevy Volt for five weeks due to lack of demand.
Presumably the Volt was an attempt by GM to help Obama with his pledge to put 1 million electric cars on the road in return for the tens of billions of dollars in forgivable “loans” that the company got from the Obama administration from the TARP bailout.
The hybrid gas-electric vehicle gets 25 miles on a full, overnight charge and costs around $40,000. To date, GM has sold around 10,000 vehicles. To put it in perspective, the Chevy Corvette has a sticker price of $49,600.
If the Volt’s not in the federal witness protection program, it ought to be.
“Sales also took a hit last fall when the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a probe into why two Volts burst into flames days or weeks after severe NHTSA crash testing,” reports USA Today. Leaks from the cooling system were caused by shortages in the electrical system that prompted the fires. But the discovery came only after weeks of bad press for GM. Eventually the car company offered to buy back every single Volt for any consumer who was unhappy.
But lack of sales- and production- hasn’t stopped the government-owned car company from mapping out a marketing strategy that might have been fashioned by the marketing geniuses of the IRS and the United States Postal Service combined: “The Volt’s technology and its recent accolade from Consumer Reports make the Volt a marketing tool for Chevy,” said Alan Batey, vice president for Chevrolet U.S. sales, at the beginning of December according to Bloomberg. “This vehicle is about more than how many we sell,” Batey said. “This vehicle is a magnet around everything we are trying to do to showcase our brand.”
If that’s the case, it looks like a poor magnet and a poor tool. And taxpayers, who are still owed billions by the company, are about to get screwed even worse in the coming months.
The website ExtremeTech calculates that the car costs about 6.3 cents per mile when running on electricity at 13 cents per kilowatt hour. But that rate ignores depreciating the cost of a replacement battery ($8,000) over the life of the battery warranty.
When you add in the cost of the battery depreciation, you get a calculation of about 14.3 cents per mile for the Volt. As the tech site notes: “A compact car getting 35 mpg would cost 10 cents per mile using $3.50-a-gallon gasoline.” So in other words, the Volt, in addition to the high cost to purchase, costs 43% more to operate than a conventional car.
That’s why the Volt is the perfect car for the Occupy Wall Street crowd: It makes no economic sense no matter how convoluted its supporters make the economic argument or how much taxpayer support it’s given. The Volt relied heavily on $7,500 federal government subsidies- and even then couldn’t make a go of it.
As one economist pointed out in the USA Today:
“The fact that GM is now facing an oversupply of Volts suggests that consumer demand is just not that strong for these vehicles,” comments Dr. Lacey Plache, chief economist for auto research site Edmunds.com. “The price premium on the Volt just doesn’t make economic sense for the average consumer when there are so many fuel-efficient gasoline-powered cars available, typically for thousands of dollars less.”
Even GM employees aren’t buying them: Eldon Renaud, president of United Auto Workers Local 2164 at the Bowling Green, Kentucky plant noted that his members were going “to use their [$7,000] profit sharing checks to put a down payment on the” Corvettes they manufacture.
Conversely, what does it tell you when GM won’t see a bump in production on a model they sell less than 2,000 of during a month when they pay record $7,000 bonuses to 47,500 workers?
USA Today goes on to point out that the Volt’s “average buyer has a $170,000 household income and doesn’t need to have a new-car purchase subsidized” by the federal government.
But that’s how The One takes care of the One Percent and an iconic car company goes from “Like a Rock” to “The Perfect Company for the One Percent.”
