Why were Sodom and Gomorrah destroyed?
The Bible tells us exactly why these cities were destroyed.
Ezekiel 16:48-50
As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done. “‘Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen. (NIV)
Ezekiel Chapter 16 is an allegory God used to compare unfaithful Jerusalem to an adulterous wife for committing religious adultery. As you can see God listed the sins of Sodom.
No homosexuality is listed there.
Those detestable or abominable acts mentioned refereed to the religious rituals popular in that time. I guess Yahweh God was very upset with competition other Gods/Aliens that these people were worshipping.
Deuteronomy 29:22-26
……….Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it. Moses was about to die and he predicted the scattering of Israel and the destruction of the land like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. This destruction of Israel was not prophesied because of homosexuality but because of religious infidelity.
This is quite in line with the context of the entire Bible. Of course God promises their restoration in Deuteronomy chapter 30.
Amos 4:11
“I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me,” declares the LORD. (NIV)
If you read the book of Amos you find that God promises to overthrow Israel as He overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah for three things: turning away from God which is religious unfaithfulness, being evil to the poor and living selfishly.
Homosexuality is not even addressed.
Jeremiah 23:13,14
“Among the prophets of Samaria I saw this repulsive thing: They prophesied by Baal and led my people Israel astray. And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that no one turns from his wickedness. They are all like Sodom to me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah.” (NIV)
Here is yet another comparison of the promised judgment of Israel to the judgment of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Once again the theme is religious unfaithfulness, not homosexuality.
Matthew 10:11-15
“Whatever town or village you enter, search for some worthy person there and stay at his house until you leave. As you enter the home, give it your greeting. If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town. (NIV)
Here, Jesus Christ compares the sin of Sodom to the sin of faithlessness in people who reject the Gospel and in-hospitality.
Matthew 11:20-24
Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.” (NIV)
Here the Lord again makes reference to Sodom’s destruction as he talks about unrepentant cities that refuse to believe in him or his miracles.
This is about religious unfaithfulness and unbelief, not homosexuality.
Notice that Jesus said WHOEVER believes in him shall have eternal life. The condemnation is reserved for WHOEVER does not believe in Him. He made no mention of homosexuals in this passage.
The Hebrew word in the Old Testament or in the Torah and in the verse concerning Sodom And Gomorrah is Yada meaning to know and has even a wider sense like:
- to Perceive – to Learn
- to Understand – to Recognize
- to Believe – to Accept His Claims
When the angels (messengers) for YAWHEH the biblical god came to Lot’s house they wanted to know them ( meaning to see who they were and recognize them and know from where they came from.)
Christians and Islamics are in error in believing it was because of homosexuals acts.
The theory that Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed because of homosexuality is full of holes.
The idea that “all” the men of Sodom were gay is ridiculous.
For one thing, Lot’s daughters were pledged to be married to men of Sodom.
If all the men were homosexuals, why did Lot offer his daughters to appease them?
What good would it do to offer a gay man a woman to have sex with?
Finally, these people threatened Lot. If he didn’t comply with their wishes they said they would do WORSE to him than that to the two visitors. They were also trying to force the door down.
These people were very angry just to have sex with two angles or messengers that it becomes ridiculous.
The original Hebrew word to know is yada there is no sexual intercourse there and all is very well explained.

First the Bible was not written in English. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament was written in Greek and Aramaic a Syrian dialect spoken in the region around the Lake of Galilee. These original hand-written manuscripts are referred to as original autographs.
The word homosexual was only coined during the last two centuries yet they Christians choose to place it in a two thousand year old text!
Because of this and the prime verse used by “Christian” right-wing fundamentalists against homosexuals: Leviticus 18:22, and its sister verse 20:13. Verse 18:22 describes the offense while 20:13 prescribes the punishment.
These verses are used as basis for Romans 1:27, 1 Corinthians 6:9, 1 Timothy 1:10, etc.
The things we have to know and find out in the bible is Israel had twelve sons from which came the twelve tribes of Israel. One of the tribe was Levi.
When Yahweh the biblical God set up His kingdom in the Promised Land, the Tribe of Levi was set aside to tend the duties of the Temple.
The other 11 tribes “tithed” their subsistence in the form of crops, oil, cattle, etc..
It is important to know that Levites were the priests and the Book of Leviticus described the duties and responsibilities of these priests.
Chapters 18 and 19 describe rules and regulations, while chapter 20 describes the punishments for violation often including death.
Let’s examine verse 18:22 in more detail:
“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22).
The very important thing to know and key word to understand is the Hebrew word tow’ebah for which the preferred translation is either idol or idolatry.
So if a man lies with another man in sexual intercourse for the purpose of pagan religious worship, such actions are indeed prohibited by the Bible.
If people today homosexuals are engaging in sex for the purpose of pagan worship these actions are prohibited by Scripture.
Yahweh biblical God was very clear on idol worship. Consider His Commandments:
“I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing loving kindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.” (Exodus 20:2-6)
So Yahweh God does not condemn homosexuals in general fellow Christians but the priests who commit idolatry by having sex with their own gender in religious worships which Yahweh God condemns as pagan and forbids to do so.
Now ask yourselves fellow Christians why would men having sex together be considered idolatry or idol worship?
The anser lies in and is about pagan fertility cults.
Thousands of years ago people looked to the land for their livelihood. As farmers they knew if you had good seed and you fertilized well, you would reap good harvests and that depended if they had good rains and didn’t have natural disasters.
Back then they could control the planting of seed, plowing and fertilizing, but they had little control over rains and other weather factors.
The rains and the weather factors were the dominion of the Gods.
They reasoned, there was some connection between human fertility and the growth in humans with the same things in plants.
Thus besides offering plant seeds to the gods, they opted to offer human seed (semen) as well so the Gods would give them rain and protect them from natural disasters.
This pagan worship took several forms. In one the men ejaculated their semen into the ceremonial fire. In another they threw young babies into the fire. And another form a pagan worship the worshiper had sex with a temple cult prostitute.
It is this latter practice that is covered by Leviticus 18:22.
