The abuse inherent in pornography goes unquestioned in large part by both men and women. Look at the movie ticket sales for “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which opened the day before Valentine’s Day and is expected to take in up to $90 million over the four-day weekend

In porn, human imperfections do not exist. The oversized silicone breasts, the pouting, gel-inflated lips, the bodies sculpted by plastic surgeons, the drug-induced erections that never subside and the shaved pubic regions—which cater to porn’s pedophilia—turn performers into pieces of plastic. Smell, sweat, breath, heartbeats and touch are erased along with tenderness. Women in porn are packaged commodities. They are pleasure dolls and sexual puppets. They are stripped of true emotions. Porn is not about sex, if one defines sex as a mutual act between two partners, but about masturbation, a solitary auto-arousal devoid of intimacy and love. 

Along with the rise of pornography there has been an explosion in sex-related violence, including domestic abuse, rape and gang rape. A rape is reported every 6.2 minutes in the United States, but the estimated total, taking into account unreported assaults, is perhaps five times higher

 Over a thousand homicides of that kind a year—meaning that every three years the death toll tops 9/11′s casualties, though no one declares a war on this particular kind of terror

In his justly famous essay ”Politics and the English Language”, George Orwell talks about how cliches and metaphors are used to obscure truth and to disguise disturbing implications from a gullible reading public:

Political language – and with variations this is true of all political parties from Conservatives to Anarchists – is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidarity to pure wind (George Orwell, ‘Politics and the English Language’ in Shooting an Elephant.

The language in “50 Shades of Grey” works the same: it shrouds the horror of domestic violence in cliches and metaphors, hiding the true nature of the abuse of power behind boringly predictable erotic shibboleths. In thus romanticising domestic abuse, it makes us blind and numb to their reality – both in the fictional world and in reality.

To see why this blindness matters let’s look at a few statistics:

Somewhere between 60,000 and 85,000 women, and 8000 and 10,000 men are raped in the UK every year.
One out of every three women has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
The CPS estimates that around 1,000,000 women in the UK are victims of domestic violence each year (the true nature is probably much higher when you add in aspects of abusive relationships that don’t fall within CPS’ remit, such as emotional abuse).
The NSPCC show that 1 in 3 teenage girls experience abuse or coercive sex within a relationship with someone their own age.
In the UK, an average of 2 women a week get killed by abusive partners or husbands.
