These Are the Magnificent Mountains of Zhangjiajie National Forest, China

Islands of rock and trees float in a sea of clouds. This magic scene happens during the rainy season in the Zhangjiajie forrest in China. The moisture turns into fog which flows among the rock formations and carst mountains.

Lee’s filming at Zhengjiajie mountains in China takes us briefly to another world—I would love to go.

Lee is the cinematographer who filmed this stunning short scenic film, for Evosia studios. He’s an incredible artist, deeply connected to nature. His work is a reflection of that: “Inspiring city dwellers to reconnect and draw inspiration from the power, beauty and wisdom of nature.”

“Between heaven and earth exists all living things. Natural forces like light, wind, heat, cold, and water shape our existence just, as they have the breathtaking landscapes in China’s Zhangjiajie National Forest,” writes Henry Jun Wah Lee.

Traveling to the this location of Zhangjiajie is doable, but Lee notes he didn’t see many westerners there. That may be due to it being the rainy season, or just too out of the way for most tourists. But it is that rainy season that creates this magic scene.

“Light rain won’t do it. You need a downpour. Then, you need to be fast, as the fog doesn’t stay around for very long,” Lee wrote on his Vimeo page. “The right conditions don’t happen often, but when they do, it is an amazing sight to behold.”

How to get there:

You can take an over night train from Shanghai. Then a 2-3 hour bus ride to the entrance of the Zhangjiajie National Forest. To get close to the locations he was at and to see those views, Lee says it’s another hours walk from the entrance. Not a bad little hike.

Zhangjiajie city is in the northwestern part of Hunan province. Click here for a map and area guide. The city and region are a beautiful place to visit and there’s plenty to see and do. Zhangjiajie National Forest is a World Heritage Site.

They’ve recently built an amazing glass elevator up the side of one of the mountains, so if you want the views, but don’t want the climb, this looks incredible.

There are days worth of trails and sights to see in the area, so plan on staying at the very least, two to three days.
