Comedian Jon Stewart Defends Trump Supporters and Trashes Mainstream Media (Video)
Liberal comedian Jon Stewart, known for trashing Republicans during his stint on “The Daily Show,” has likely greatly angered his peers on the left by taking a stunning stance in defense of President-elect Donald Trump’s supporters and America’s future.
“Not everybody that voted for Trump is a racist,” he said last week at a “Times Talk” event in New York City designed to promote a new audio book by Chris Smith detailing the history of “The Daily Show,” according to MRCTV.
In his comments, Stewart knew he was going to enrage many who normally lap up his critiques.
“I don’t give a f— what any of you say to me — you can yell it at me, you can tweet it at me — they’re not all racists,” Stewart continued. “Or they’re not giving tacit support to a racist system.”
To further cement his point, Stewart noted that he has met a bevy of Sept. 11 first responders who voted for Trump and were anything but racist.
“The same people that voted for Trump ran into burning buildings and saved whoever the f— they could, no matter what color they were, no matter what religion, and they would do it again tomorrow,” he said.
“There are guys in my neighborhood who I love, I respect, that I think have incredible qualities — that are not afraid of Mexicans and not afraid of Muslims and not afraid of blacks,” he said at the time, as can be seen in the video below. “They’re afraid of their insurance premiums.”
These examples of Stewart speaking in defense of Trump and his supporters did not mean that he himself was a fan. Not be a long shot. During the event Wednesday, in fact, the liberal comedian had plenty of criticism for the president-elect.
Still, despite his criticism and concerns regarding Trump, Stewart was nevertheless optimistic about America’s future.
“But the only thing I would tell everybody to hearten is, we’re still the same country,” he noted, according to The Huffington Post. “Obama didn’t change and fix everything and Trump can’t ruin everything.”
Actually, Trump may very well wind up making things much better for the American people, though obviously Stewart was not yet quite ready to accept this very real possibility.
