Russia Unveils World’s Biggest Ever Nuclear Submarine

Moscow’s seapower is set to expand as navy bosses revealed Project 09852 – which is primed to be the biggest nuclear-powered sub on Earth.

The vessel – known as Belgorod – would be nearly 200-metres long and would be tasked with deep-sea exploration in the Arctic.

Putin’s new 184-metre sub will be based around the unfinished Antey-class missile strike carrier vessel developed by the Soviet Union.

Belgorod will be 14 metres longer than the USS Pennsylvania, the biggest submarine the fleet of the US Navy.

Project 09852 would also be 11 metres longer than the biggest submarine ever unveiled by Russia – the Typhoon cruiser.

The sub’s prime mission will be unexplored territory beneath the Arctic shelf – amid fears Russia and the US could race for oil beneath the North Pole.

The submarine was revealed to carry scientific equipment and unmanned deep-sea vehicles, Russian newspaper Izvestia reported.

It will also carry a number of smaller submarines – known as bathyscaphes – as Putin expands into the Arctic.

Professor Vadim Kozyulin, of the Academy of Military Sciences, said: “It will transport and install autonomous nuclear submarine modules designed to charge uninhabited submarines on the seabed.”
