Russia puts Israel in check by sending troops to southern Syria

Despite opposition by Israel, Russia has deployed troops in southern Syria and near Golan Heights to monitor the truce regime.

Local media reported Monday that Russian military forces have taken up positions in the southern city of Izra, in the southern province of Daraa, where they carry out the task of monitoring the ceasefire in southern Syria, reached by The presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, respectively, last July 7.

It is the first time that Russia deploys military units of this size in that area, although its military personnel were already in Daraa to advise the troops of the Syrian Arab Army.

Israeli military intelligence website DEBKAfile has reported on Tuesday that these Russian forces are preparing to move in the next few days to the city of Al-Quneitra, near the Golan Heights occupied by the Israeli regime.
