Charlotte Hopkins has taken a different spin on the stories of our men and women who wear the blue uniform. Yes, I know there are many different colors for those who are sworn to protect and serve. It doesn’t matter the color of the uniform or the name on the sleeve. What matters is that these men and women do more than just write tickets and arrest criminals. Believe it or not they are human with human feelings and emotions, with families of their own. They feel pain, hurt, laughter and they have seen the ugly side of the human experience.

However, that being said, they have a side that many will never see. That side is called compassion. They have been known to literally give someone the shirt off their back, to find warm dry places to stay, to even play Santa Claus to children who were thrown out on the street. These men and women are not ten feet tall and bullet proof. Sure they wear the vest, they carry the gun and they can be harsh. But that is just the surface.

In order to see the three dimensional side of a cop you need to read Heros in Blue. Ms. Hopkins shows the reader the other side of those who protect and serve. She shows the tears, the joy and the reward of being able to help instead of arrest.

What grabbed me was the story of the cop in Rome, Georgia, my parents hometown and where I spent many years as a child. Rome is unforgiving and to see a cop take a family who had been tossed aside and give them a helping hand kept me reading.
