“SCARY MARY”

OVERVIEW

Mary just wants to be left alone, but the cheerleaders, jocks, guidance counselors, and ghosts won’t stop harrassing her. When a new boy starts school, he surprises Mary by befriending her. That’s a rare thing for the school freak, but her unusual abilities put a rift in their budding friendship when Mary has to tell Cy that his home is haunted and not by Casper, the friendly ghost.

REVIEW

There’s really nothing scary about “Scary Mary”. She’s a typically misunderstood goth-kid, who is being bullied at school by all the usual suspects, and shunned because of her unusual talent for being able to communicate with ghosts.

An interesting, yet predictable plot with few twists; this is something I’d recommend for YA readers new to the horror genre. I really liked the two main characters and I especially enjoyed the author’s sense of humor, and often burst out laughing at the banter between the two friends and their sarcastic interactions with the most popular girl in school.

Overall, “Scary Mary” is a clean, enjoyable, quick read, suitable for readers of all ages. No profanity or explicit content, and violence are kept to a minimum. I’m looking forward to reading the sequel, titled “Stalking Shadows”.
