This House is Haunted

   In 1977 the worlds most convincing and alluring poltergeist occurrence began in an average semi-detached house in Enfield, North London. What makes this case the most captivating case that we have ever seen, is the fact that, in this instance, the affair lasted some fourteen months and was heavily documented by not only Mr Playfair, one of the most respected researchers into psychical phenomena. But, also by newspaper journalists, local residents and even the police.

The strange happenings seemed to be centered around 12 year old Janet, a somewhat troubled little girl. As is all too familiar in proceedings like these, it began with odd sounds and knocking. Before long, objects started to move of their own accord. Not knowing what to do, the family contacted the police, who swiftly searched their home and left, saying to the family ”we can see nobody here breaking the law”. Stressed and not knowing what to do, the family contacted the Society for Psychical Research and investigator Maurice Grosse (RIP) was soon on the scene to investigate the case.

Grosse was so convinced by the case that, at a meeting at the SPR, he requested volunteers to help him. Soon after, Guy Lyon Playfair stepped up to the mark. The team of Grosse and Playfair then spent months and months almost living at the property, observing and recording all of the irregular happenings, and This House is Haunted is Playfair’s harrowing account.

Just like in many other cases of poltergeist phenomena the activity was coming thick and fast, but the sheer volume of witnessed incidents in this house really would make even the most hardened skeptic ask themselves some important questions. 

Q. How can things fly around the room on their own? 
A. Nobody knows, but they did very often in-front of many people – deal with it!

As the days turned into months the activity got more and more strange. Playfair details accounts of possible dematerialisation, levitation and even possession. I would say that Playfair’s book is not for the faint of heart, however, the book details factual events witnessed by credible people with no additions from the author. That makes it truth, and I am a firm believer that everyone should know the truth. 

Guy Lyon Playfair was born in India in 1935 but was educated in England. He attended Cambridge University and obtained a degree in modern languages. He spent many years in Brazil as a freelance journalist and researcher. It was whilst in Brazil that Playfair spent time with the IBPP, Brazil’s first and only psychical research organization. He has been a member of the British Society for Psychical Research since 1973 and was elected to it’s council in 2004. Playfair has written 12 books and is world renowned for his expertise in paranormal phenomena.

This book, although carefully detailing every single event witnessed by the author, is truly a work of art. I rarely enjoy reading a book like I did with this one. The story is utterly captivating and Playfairs warm writing style just adds to the sheer amazement I felt when my nose was between the covers. 

I believe Guy’s sole intention when writing the book, was to display a realistic and, more importantly, truthful portrayal of events, and he certainly has succeeded in his quest. The book is bewitching from the very first page. I would challenge anyone to not finish this book once you have started it – I don’t think it can be done. 

So, if you are interested in the paranormal and especially “poltergeists” (German word meaning “noisy ghost” – thanks Guy!), why haven’t you read this book already? 

Honestly, if you read no other book in the paranormal genre, you should read this.
