Two UN Gangsters Jailed For Cocaine Conspiracy
Two senior UN gang members have received big jail terms after pleading guilty to a cocaine conspiracy.
Douglas Vanalstine, the co-founder of the gang, and Daryl Johnson, a senior gang member, entered their guilty pleas in July in the. Supreme Court in Vancouver.
On Tuesday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Carol Ross sentenced Vanalstine, 52, to 10 years in jail for the offence but she reduced his sentence to 41 months in jail, after giving him credit for pre-sentence custody and time spent in segregation. During sentencing Vanalstine’s lawyer had requested that his client receive 3 to 1 credit for the six months he spent in segregation at North Fraser.
The judge gave Johnson, 34, an 8-year jail term, reducing it to 7 years, 2 months after giving him credit for pre-sentence custody. Vanalstine spent a total of 2½ years in the general prison population, with his lawyer requesting that he receive two-for-one credit for that time spent awaiting trial.
Johnson had five months’ pre-sentence custody, which at 2 for 1 credit reduced his sentence to 7 years, 2 months. 2 for 1 credit for pre-sentence custody has been phased out in Canada, but the prosecution said that, in this case, they would not oppose it.
The two men met with a police agent, who cannot be identified due to a legal ban, on a number of occasions in 2009 to facilitate the purchase of 100 kgs of cocaine. The pair provided a $100,000 down payment and delivered 100 kilograms of mostly fake cocaine.
They were then arrested and charged.
Vanalstine was described as the “directing mind” behind the drug-trafficking scheme. Johnson was the “right-hand man” and integrally involved in the conspiracy. As part of their plea agreement, a third gang member, Nicholas Wester, had his charges stayed.
The same police agent, a convicted drug trafficker, was used in a reverse cocaine sting against Abbotsford gangster Jarrod Bacon, 29, and Wayne Scott, 56. Both men were convicted at trial.
Bacon was sentenced to 12 years in jail but is appealing that sentence. Scott received a 3½-year jail term.
