I Cast Thee Out by Brian Allan

Some of the first instances of exorcism often involved what we would call “sympathetic magic”. The priests would make a tablet out of clay and command the invading entity to enter it. When it was concluded that the spirit was now inside the tablet – they would destroy it, thus supposedly destroying the unwanted presence.

I Cast Thee Out by Brian Allan provides a balanced in-depth look into the history of exorcism, sighting some very interesting cases from all over the globe. Although not often publicised, many religions have their own form of exorcism and in this book Allan presents an impressive catalogue of research. From the first exorcism’s ever performed to the last witch burning in Ireland in 1885 – this text renders most other works on the subject obsolete. 

In the second half of the book, Allan concentrates on a specific case in which he himself was involved. He first became aware of this case in 2010 when he received an email from a distraught lady in Mexico complaining about strange phenomena in her home. After some investigation and much correspondence it was decided that the house in which the woman lived was possessed. Allan contacted two mediums and eventually the situation progressed to the point where the only sensible option was to perform a remote exorcism. After a few failed attempts – the mediums and Brian Allan were eventually successful. 

The last few pages contain some very engrossing information, including an English translation of the Latin Rituale Romanum which is the text used in traditional Catholic exorcism’s. You may remember it being used by Father’s Karras and Merrin in the banned 1973 horror film “The Exorcist”.
