Interview with author Michelle Day

My Book Retreat

Today I’d like to welcome Michelle Day, author of Prodigal Son, an adult romance novel.

Q. Thank you for stopping by! Who or what inspired you to become an author?

A. I never had any aspirations to become an author and didn’t overly enjoy essay writing at school. I am however, an avid people watcher, I like to observe and used to record these observations in a diary from time to time. From this, ideas began to form and eventually, a good twenty years later, those ideas became my first book.

Q. Can you tell me a little about Prodigal Son?

A. Prodigal Son is the first book of the Jensen family series with the main focus being on the youngest son Paul and his acerbic relationship with his father. It details his trials and tribulations throughout his early life and the reader comes to realise what a determined and charming young man he is.

Q. What are you working on now?

A. I am currently working on the second and third books in the series and hope to have them available this year with the fourth book to follow early 2014. The second book continues Paul’s story with the focus changing to that of his child. Subsequent books will feature various generations of the Jensen family.

Q. What are your strategies for making characters seem real so the reader connects with them?

A. I like to give them characteristics that I find appealing in people. My male leads have to be strong willed, take charge Alpha males with a wicked sense of humour but they also have that kind caring side that only the select few get to see and they aren’t afraid to shed a few tears.

My female leads tend to be strong minded, independent women who aren’t afraid to stand up to their men, they are the quiet strength that the men draw from and lean on when things get tough.

Q. What sorts of relationships and experiences do you most like to explore in your writing?

A. The family dynamic or lack of in some circumstances is always interesting to explore. Sibling rivalry and the relationship between husband and wife is also fun to explore.

Q. What genres and authors do you most enjoy reading?

A. I tend not to stick to a single genre and generally read something that matches my mood at the time. I am a huge fan of Lee Child, Clive Cussler, Wilbur Smith and Dean Koontz but I also enjoy Lorelei James, Shelly Laurenston, Lauren Dane, G.A.Aiken, etc. I enjoy a book that I can lose myself in whether that is Jack Reacher and his many escapades or a dragon shape shifter and his dysfunctional family.

Q. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not reading?

A. I like going to the cinema, my daughter is my favourite movie companion. I’m a bit of a music buff and will therefore always have some music or other going on in the background when I’m alone and I adore going to gigs. I enjoy spending time with my son and daughter and our pets and yes, I have to say it, writing.
