Playfair himself is a very interesting man and a world renowned expert on paranormal phenomena. He moved to Brazil in the early 1970′s to work as an English teacher, but soon found himself immersed in the Brazilian culture’s of Spiritism and Spiritualism. Through various contacts, Playfair eventually managed to become a member of the IBPP – Brazil’s only serious paranormal investigators, and was allowed unrestricted access to their compiled case files.

The book itself is an astonishing yet pleasurable read, and I would expect nothing less from the author. This new version contains many stories of strange happenings – from poltergeists and psychic surgery to straight up materialisation.

I know from experience that reincarnation is a widely held belief in Brazil and it is pleasing to see that Playfair has not omitted cases of this phenomena from the book. In fact, one case involving a three year old little girl who was able to speak in a language her parent’s didn’t understand and recall memories from a past life in Rome is truly astounding. If you are interested in psychical research this is an essential read.

The author also underwent some psychic surgery himself on two occasions in Brazil and these accounts are written about in impressive detail in the book. This particular type of surgery is very popular in South America and is largely accepted as being a legitimate branch of medicine.

Although a lot of people from western countries consider these surgeons to be frauds, in this text Playfair presents so much eye witness evidence, that it would be difficult for anyone to dispute his experiences. Further to this, I would say that you would be hard pushed to find anyone with more experience in the paranormal field than the author of this book, and therefore will find no-one remotely qualified to argue with him.

It is always important to remember that as a human race we have not achieved our potential yet. We don’t understand everything and we cannot explain everything.

There is no doubt in my mind that Guy Lyon Playfair has witnessed some very strange and unexplainable things in his life. He has travelled all over the world investigating paranormal occurrences and has documented these experiences extensively in his books. The man has truly dedicated his life to psychical research – eventually joining the SPR in the UK.
