Book Review: The Prophet by Ethan Cross

Marcus Williams and his team from the Shepherd Organization are trying to find a killer ~ a man known as the Anarchist who is killing women in a ritualistic ceremony where he burns them alive. Francis Ackerman, Jr., a serial killer himself, is once again following Marcus around. This time, he’s trying to help Marcus find the killer, in his own special way.

The Prophet is the second book in the Shepherd Thriller series by Ethan Cross. I read the first in the series, The Shepherd, two years ago and loved it. This sequel does not disappoint. Once again, we’re thrust into the minds of Marcus and Ackerman, but we also get to hear the thoughts of the Anarchist, which makes the story even more complex and engaging. Despite the fact that we see what’s happening from each character’s perspective, Cross never reveals too much; he continuously creates twists and turns that blind us to what’s really going on.

In addition, Cross has a way of making the reader empathize with all of the main characters, even the two killers. While The Prophet is a thriller full of action and intrigue, it’s really all about the characters ~ and I think that’s why I love this series so much. The details are often gory and disgusting ~ people literally get ripped apart and burnt alive ~ yet I get pulled in and can’t resist reading to see what happens with the characters.

If you love thrillers and don’t mind some gore, I highly recommend this series. Just be sure to start with The Shepherd before reading The Prophet.
