A Review of The Power of Starting Something Stupid

Doing reviews of self-help books are not necessarily my bread and butter, so to speak. I will occasionally do them, and usually only if I am asked rather politely or if the book represents a unique opportunity. The Power of Starting Something Stupid is just such a book. Richie Norton has laid out, with a flowing narrative, the ideas that we wrestle with when we see the light of our lives fade in the place of burdened responsibility, self-imposed or otherwise.

To read the reviews of the book on Amazon is to be wowed by giants of industry praising Norton for speaking about what we capable of, or perhaps what we should aspire to, in order to reach our dreams. This book has the power to greatly affect, perhaps only in the short-term, a desire to enact real change in your life. Many of the ideas I have pondered myself, the notion of challenging what we believe to be common sense.

I do not like to assign starred reviews because of the artificial nature associated with values. How different, objectively, is a 3-star or 4-star book? Numerically, we can talk about relative distance. However, the very notion presupposes that we are all working the same subjective idea of what a 3-star book looks like.

Alas, this is not the case.

So, I will say this. It is a very simple read in which Norton explains the power of being stupid. A novel concept that gets at the heart of traditional decision-making. Would I recommend it to someone who was thinking about whether or not to pursue a dream? Absolutely. Would I offer it to someone as a guidebook to running a business? Probably not.

With a lot of self-help drivel out there, I think Norton’s book stands apart.
