Teenage Heart Transplant

This morning I attended training to begin volunteering at Evercare Hospice. When you think of Hospice a lot of people think depressing and hopeless thoughts when after today I learned, it’s the exact opposite. Hospice provides hope and comfort for those in a time of their life when they know it’s the end of their life’s journey. I for one am not afraid of death, I’ve conquered it too many time to be afraid of it, but for those under Hospice, I don’t think their afraid of death, I think their fear is the process of dying. As a Hospice volunteer, we bring a sense of comfort and compassion to the patients to lighten the process. Apart of the training, many volunteers spoke about their experiences from different departments.

Many volunteers spoke about their experiences from different departments during the training. One of the speakers from the grieving department conducted an exercise. Each of us were given sixteen flashcards to divide into four sets. On the first set of cards, list four different valuable objects whether it’s sentimental, like a necklace passed down from generations upon generations or something simple like a cell phone. The next set of cards, write four different wonders of nature valued such as sunsets or rainy days. The third set of cards consisted of four specific loved ones and the last set of cards made up four favorite past times.
After thinking of sixteen valuable aspects of my life the speaker read a story having us picture our self as the victim in the story. I’ll try and summarize the story:

Taking place in your elder years, after discovering an alarming lump you go to the doctor to get it checked out. A week later, the doctor calls back with the results. The conversation was a blur but the words “surgery” ,”radiation” and “chemo” stand out. Flash forward, treatment has been continuous but your condition seems to worsen. Your entire life has been turned upside down as you sit in your bed gasping your last breaths of air.

Throughout the story we were told to remove a card from our sixteen valuables. By the end of the story, we returned back to reality and read off the last card remaining. Moral of the exercise was to be appreciative of your life and to have gratitude for who and what surrounds you. What was on my last card you say?

When it comes down to what’s most important to me, I couldn’t live without my dad. My dad isn’t just a father figure to me, he’s my best friend. He listens to the wonders of high school drama in my life and actually gives valuable pieces of advice. He takes time to spend time with me like going to Waffle House at 9 p.m. or watching Harry Potter with me for nine billionth time. He manages his day around my day whether it’s getting me to skating on time or driving me to a friends house. Sometimes we’ll stay up just talking and he’ll just listen to me, get’s to know me without a smidgen of judgment. He knows I’m not perfect and doesn’t inflict greater expectations upon my own regarding school, volunteering or extracurricular activities. Overall, he just thinks of the best for me and I know he’ll always be there for me. I know it sounds like cliche and typical things you’re supposed to say about your dad on Father’s Day but I definitely appreciate my dad on a daily basis rather than just on one designated day. Sometimes, I really do take him for granted considering he’s my chauffeur, my wallet, my support system and my motivator all under one title.

Thank you for an amazing childhood full of Disneyland trips, birthday pool parties, fatal pet hamsters and a lot of beanie babies.
Thank you for being the one behind the camera at my dance recitals, chorus performances and skating competitions.
Thank you for the pot roast, stir fry and lettuce wrap dinners.
Thank you for reminding me about my med’s everyday, holding my hair while nauseous in the hospital and holding my hand throughout every blood draw.
Thank you for sitting through the mental breakdowns and the PMS.
Thank you for not eating me alive after receiving bad report cards in the mail.
Thank you for knocking and closing the door completely when leaving my room (you have no idea how much that bothers me).
But all in all, thank you for being the best dad a girl could ask for!

My name is Shelby Cooper and I have had two heart transplants. Living with heart disease has encouraged me to spread Congenital Heart Disease Awareness, and to tell kids with heart defects; you’re not alone.
