SUMMARY
Catarina Perez has become stronger than any other person she has ever met. She can sprint for miles without breaking a sweat, and punching through solid oak doors is no longer a challenge. She can hear a person’s heartbeat from across the room and smell their emotions when they begin to fear her.
She has power beyond her wildest dreams, but she is discovering that they come with a price. A price that is quickly becoming too steep for her to pay. For what’s a little immeasurable power when all you have to hand over is your soul?
REVIEW
Catharsis takes a thrilling, brand new approach to the whole becoming a being with superpowers and murderous urges, scenario. The main character, Catarina Perez or Cat, wakes up in an alley with a dead man for company, blood all over the place and no idea how she got there. Soon she discovers that she has unusual and highly enhanced senses of hearing, sight and smell. An altercation with a mugger convinces her that she also has strength and speed beyond what any human should have. Too bad that she seems to have lost her ability to taste food.
What a fantastic experience to read a book with a strong and absolutely unique female lead who is dependent on nobody and has to learn to cope with her new powers on her own. After she discovers that she would really like to drink the school nurse’s blood, she flees to where she can’t harm others. From then on she has the lengthy, frustrating and often frightening task of learning her own powers and dealing with her thirst.
This story, told from the first person perspective of the main character, truly gets the reader into the head and mind of someone who discovered that she changed into something that should only exist in myths and legend. She has a constant battle in her mind about good and evil. In her life before she woke up in that alley, she was a person who avoided swearing and blaspheming and now she might have to kill to stay alive. She tries to do something good with her wonderful strength and senses but even that turns out to have a price of evil that she must pay.
I have to warn readers that they might want to keep the Kleenex handy as there are some thoroughly heartbreaking moments in this story. On the other hand the whole tone of narration throughout the book is quirky, witty, and full of word play and hilarious references to popular culture.
For an absolutely unique reading experience, worthy of more than its five stars, treat yourself and get hold of Catharsis.
