Tell us about your most recent release.
Colorado Promise is a sweet Western Historical Romance, set in Greeley, Colorado, in 1875. I decided to try writing in this genre because not only do I love horses, Westerns (like Lonesome Dove), and history, but I lived in Colorado for years and thought it would be fun to explore what life was like back then, when the trains first came into that state (or territory, as it was called back then). This book releases November 1.
What else do you have coming out?
Books 2 and 3 in the Front Range series will be out sometime next year—Colorado Hope and Colorado Promise. I first have to write them . . .
Is there anything you want to make sure potential readers know?
This is a squeaky clean romance, with heart-stopping, foot-thumping passion but it’s very PG. I don’t read romance and dislike the steamy side of the genre that is just about titillation. I really like a rich, deep story with believable characters and lots of plot.
Are the names of the characters in your novels important?
I like this question, because yes, I always feel characters’ names are important. This is something I learned from the mystery writer, Elizabeth George. Certain names give specific impressions. Some may not be universal, but you can usually figure most people will have a similar image in mind of a girl named Tiffany as compared to one named Mary. It’s always good to have easily pronounceable names and spellings that aren’t too complex.
What about the titles of your novels?
Titles of books are even more important than character names. A title should broadcast the genre, if possible, and even better, the theme of the book. Books that bring out motifs inside and in the title are strong and memorable. In my book, I picked the title before I even thought out the plot. But since promise was in the title, I knew I had to use that word as a motif—in effect, a promise to the reader—throughout. And I did.
Are there any occupational hazards to being a novelist?
Only when you are concentrating so hard you spill hot coffee on your lap.
How many people have you done away with over the course of your career?
Well, I just killed four nasty ranchers who were intent on murder. So I guess that wins me a gold star, right?
If you were going to commit the perfect murder, how would you go about it?
Well, not sure, but I certainly wouldn’t first put it in any of my novels!
What do you want to be when you grow up?
A writer.
Do you ever wish that you had an entirely uncreative job, like data entry or working in a factory?
Excuuuuzzzeee me???
What are the most important attributes to remaining sane as a writer?
1) Not taking yourself too seriously
2) Take your work seriously, but not too seriously
3) Seriously, work hard to learn how to be a serious writer
4) Don’t repeat the same word over and over again in your writing.
Do you research your novels?
I do. Research is essential, especially with historicals. There is nothing worse than hysteria over historical that portray things or have characters say things that are anachronistic. And since that big word was invented in 1617, it’s okay for my characters in 1875 to use it!
Why do you think what you do matters?
Since nothing is really matter but just a lot of empty space, nothing matters. As my science teacher used to say: “Nothing’s matter, so nothing matters.” Hmm, he was a bit antisocial and dysfunctional however.
But, really, I think everything we do matters, and everything we do affects other people. We need to be careful. Words have consequences.
Have you ever found true love?
Yes.
Are you jealous of other writers?
Sometimes. But it passes like a rainstorm on the desert plains.
Are you doing what you truly want to do?
Yep.
Do you have a dream to follow?
Yep. See above.
Are you proud of what you’re doing or what you’ve done?
Yep. See above above.
If you could travel to the past in a time machine, what advice would you give to the 6-year-old you?
Get out of the house as soon as you can and never go into business with your mother!
