Graven Images

This might be the most misunderstood message from the ancients that could not be more important and relevant today. Moses laid down God’s law forbidding graven images in the Temple, nor any idol. The punishment was strict and even led to wars. But what was Moses referring to? Many have recognized graven images in 2000 BC timeframe referred to hieroglyphics, common Egyptian writing. Moses was an Egyptian. It makes perfect sense he was referring to the characters in their written language.

Was Moses Law prohibiting writing in the Temple as a way to protect the structure from graffiti? Could you imagine a bunch of teenagers sneaking into the Temple to chisel their gang signs and messages on the Temple columns? The temple guards would need to be sound sleepers or just really slow not to prevent it.

The common form of recording in that timeframe was clay impression. Paper is rare. Scored gold plate or marked leather is used for important documents. Clay impression with a simple stylist was common for recording inventories. It could be wiped clean like an EtcherSketch, reused multiple times, corrected, and finally baked for preservation if needed.

The accepted answer to this graven image puzzle falls short of reality. The common interpretation deals with slavery. Moses Law was preventing the people from recording their history. I should qualify the prior statement to be the common interpretation by secularists, because denying the people the right to record their history paints the Jews in a bad light. Without recorded history, mistakes will be repeated and quality of life reduced. The wild boar analogy explains how free people are enslaved due to written history being prevented.

It begins by studying your prey. Everyday, place a small pile of their favorite food near their migration paths. Continue to feed the boars, each day placing the new pile closer to an open area where it will be easier to capture the wild animal. Even though the boars have deviated from their natural path, they don’t mind entering a less secure zone because they get fed. Comfort, complacency drops their guard. One day a post is sticking out of the ground near the food pile, but it does not give them concern because this is now their feeding ground. Soon after a wall appears, then another, and another, but the food is still easy to get to until the pen door is shut. Now, they find themselves contained but don’t remember how they arrived. All they know is food arrives daily, and the world beyond the solid walls is unknown and scary. Captivity provides comfort even though conditions are rapidly deteriorating. But, without anything to compare to, they accept it.

That is how you capture wild boars and turn free people into slaves. Today, the pen walls represent the news media. We only know what they tell us. Forbidding graven images in the Temple is a four thousand year old warning not to let Government write our history. It is another misinterpretation. It should read, No graven images [by] the Temple. In that time, the Church is the governing body as represented by the Temple. Allowing Government to record history is a recipe guaranteeing Slavery of the Governed because the People only know what the Government wants them to know. Our modern news media is a willing partner in that crime.
