Savas Beatie’s Latest Emerging Civil War Series Title Delves into the Second Day of the Battle of Gettysburg

EL DORADO HILLS, CA: June 29, 2016 – Just in time for the Gettysburg anniversary, Savas Beatie announced the release of their second Emerging Civil War Series book by the trio of Civil War historians Chris Mackowski, Kristopher D. White, and Daniel T. Davis, Don’t Give an Inch: The Second Day at Gettysburg, July 2, 1863–From Little Round Top to Cemetery Ridge. Following their previous book, Fight Like the Devil: The First Day at Gettysburg, July 1, 1863, this new book takes an in-depth look at the second day of perhaps the most famous battle in United States history.

With names that have become legendary—Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, the Peach Orchard, the Wheatfield, Culp’s Hill—the second day at Gettysburg encompasses some of the best-known engagements of the Civil War. Yet those same stories have also become shrouded in mythology and misunderstanding. In Don’t Give an Inch, Emerging Civil War historians Mackowski, White, and Davis focus on the south end of the field, peeling back the layers to share the real and often-overlooked stories of that fateful summer day. In the same engaging style that has invited thousands of readers into the Civil War’s most important stories and won the series the Lieutenant General Richard G. Trefry Award from the Army Historical Foundation, the authors share their intimate knowledge of the battlefield they grew up on.

“What Americans know about Gettysburg is as much myth as fact, and July 2, in particular, has a line-up of stories that captures the imagination like few other events in the Civil War,” said Mackowski. “We wanted to lay out the real story as clearly and as interestingly as we could, and get at what really happened. Then we try to explain how some of the battle’s most popular stories took on lives of their own.”

“The names Gettysburg and Little Round Top have been indelibly linked since July 2, 1863,” explained White. “For many casual students of the battle, the battle begins and ends at Little Round Top. Yet there is much more to the story of the second day at Gettysburg. Dan Sickles’ forward movement proved to be nearly disastrous for the Federals. The hellacious fighting in the Wheatfield sapped the strength of the Confederate assault on Meade’s left flank. And unwavering leadership by Winfield Scott Hancock helped secure the Federal center, and stem the Rebel tide. Don’t Give an Inch goes beyond general storytelling and examines the fighting that engulfed the entire south end of the Gettysburg battlefield.”

“The second day at Gettysburg is a critical moment in the battle,” said Davis. “The Army of Northern Virginia had scored a stunning victory on July 1, and to retain the initiative, Robert E. Lee was determined to attack the Union army again. The fighting that occurred on Little Round Top, Devil’s Den, the Wheatfield, the Peach Orchard, and on Cemetery Ridge is some of the most well known in American military history. It is also some of the most brutal.”

About the Authors: Chris Mackowski, Ph.D., and Kristopher D. White are cofounders of Emerging Civil War, and Daniel T. Davis is managing editor. Between them, they have authored more than a dozen books and have penned articles for all the major Civil War magazines. Chris is a writing professor at St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, NY, and historian-in-residence at Stevenson Ridge, a historic property on the Spotsylvania battlefield. Daniel has worked as a historian at Appomattox Court House National Historic Site. Kris is a former Licensed Battlefield Guide at Gettysburg. All have worked as historians at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. Read their blog at www.emergingcivilwar.com.
