Zions Bank Savings Account 1.11% APY

The Zions Bank’s online banking division may be new, but the bank itself has a pretty long history. Established in 1873, Zions Bank (NASDAQ: ZION), headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, has more than 125 branch offices in 2 states, Utah and Idaho. In addition to those traditional banking products that you can usually get in their B&M branches, Zions Bank also have a few online-only accounts, such as Internet Savings Account and Money Market Account.

Zions Bank Internet Savings Account currently has an yield of 1.11% APY, which is quite competitive in this environment. The rate is not as high as the rates you can get from, for example, Sallie Mae Bank (1.25% APY) or Discover Bank (1.20% APY), but is better than those offered by *old* online banks such as ING Direct and Ally Bank. The Savings Account requires a $100 minimum initial deposit in order to open the account. However, to get the 1.11% yield, the account has to maintain a minimum balance of $1,000.

Zions Bank Money Market Account has the same yield as the Savings Account, currently at 1.11% APY. The minimum initial deposit for opening a Money Market Account is $1,000. While the Money Market Account has the same 6 monthly pre-authorized transfers as the Savings Account, you can make an unlimited number of withdrawals from your account in person, by ATM, or by mail. Besides, the Money Market Account supports check writing availability (checks will be included with your new account) and you can withdraw cash from its nationwide network of surcharge-free ATMs.

In addition to savings accounts, Zions Bank also has an Internet Interest Checking Account, which offers tiered rates depending on the amount of deposit: 0.40% APY applies to account balances of $100,000 plus; 0.20% APY applies to account balances of $20,000 – $99,999.99; 0.10% APY applies to account balances of $2,500 – $19,999.99.  The account required a minimum opening deposit amount of $100. To earn interests, a $2,500 minimum deposit is needed. Obviously, the Interest Checking Account isn’t that appealing compared to the savings account. There are better interest checking accounts out there.
