Sometimes users may receive a message to inform them their computers have encountered such as “cannot delete folder” or “cannot delete file”. This error is caused by a system corruption. Your system is locking up from the presence of a ghost file or a virus.

What is a ghost file?

When you uninstall a program, some files related to the particular program may not be deleted completely and therefore are left in your hard drive. These files are called “Ghost Files”.

How to remove ghost files?

If you have ghost files in your computer, you should remove these files to prevent the error mentioned above. If you want to uninstall ghost files completely,  try the following methods:

Using msconfig to unlock files
1. Hold down the Windows key and press “R”. Type “msconfig” and hit the “enter” key.
2. Select the tab labeled “Startup”.
3. Uncheck the boxes that correspond with any ghost files you are attempting to delete. Reboot the system.
4. Delete the desired ghost file.

Using regedit to unlock files
1. Hold down the Windows key and press “R”. Type “regedit” and hit the “enter” key.
2. Select “Yes” in the dialogue box titled “User Account Control” if present.
3. Press Ctrl + F. Type in the name of the ghost file and hit “enter”.
4. Press F3 if the first search is not the exact name of the ghost file in question.
5. Backup the registry entry by selecting “File”, then “Export”. Save the entry someplace you can easily access and remember. This action will help protect your system if you prevent a critical file from loading.
6. Press the delete button and confirm the deletion.
7. Continue to scan for additional entries, repeating steps 4 to 6. Delete all occurrences of the file in question. Once this is completed, reboot the system and delete the desired ghost file.

The above methods, or using a packaged solution like Acebyte Uninstall Manager, should help to alleviate your ghost file issues.
