Niche Business Idea: Gluten-Free Personal Chef
Although there are gluten-free alternatives, they don’t always taste great. Coming up with a gluten-free menu that people like can be challenging.
The Opportunity
This can be great news, however, for people who like to cook and can prepare a delicious gluten free meal. There is a market in need, and people who can fill this need are well-positioned to start a profitable business.
Of course, not all gluten-free eaters want to hire a personal chef. That said, there is a significant market of busy families, executives and people who simply don’t want to cook. Just because people don’t have the time to cook doesn’t mean that they don’t enjoy a home-cooked meal and won’t pay for it.
The reason why the gluten-free market can be a good place to focus is that there is not much competition out there – yet. It’s not like you want a hot meal fast and you can just order a pizza. There are limited items available – and good ones at that.
Business Requirements
In many states, if you want to be a personal chef, you will need to get a general business license. You will also need to take a class and pass an exam to get a food handler’s certification. If you prepare food in your home, you will also need to have your cooking space inspected by your state’s Department of Health.
Finding Clients
Start spreading the word about your personal chef service by contacting people you know. None of these contacts may be an ideal customer for you – but keep in mind that each of them has their own network of friends and associates that may be searching for what you offer.
Become a member of industry organizations like the American Personal and Private Chef Association. They have a service called “Personal Chef Search” on their website that helps visitors find personal chefs in their area. This can be a simple way to connect with your ideal customers.
Reach out to local community groups in your area such as MeetUp groups focused on healthy living, cooking or even gluten-free. Some groups welcome speakers or would be happy to have you hold a cooking workshop with tips on gluten free cooking. This demonstrates your skills and knowledge while spreading the word about your services in your area.
