The Power of Leverage and How To Use It To Get Rich

Leverage allows you to accomplish greater goals, with less effort, by utilizing the proper tools. The best way to learn something is by doing it, and I want to give you a quick demonstration on how leverage works. The reason I chose the above book is because its one of the best marketing books I’ve every read, and I think everyone should own and read a copy of it. Second, I wanted to demonstrate the power of leverage to you. It took me about 30 seconds to add the above link, which pays me a small 4% – 15% commission on any sales resulting from the click.

Many people don’t consider adding affiliate links to be a form of leverage, but it is. Whenever someone clicks the above link, I’m getting paid for all of the time and hard work that Mark Hughes put into writing his book. In essence, I’m leveraging:

  • His Time (OPT)
  • His Expertise (OPE)
  • His Work (OPW)

I won’t leave you in the dark with vague acronyms: Other People’s Time (OPT), Other People’s Experience (OPE), and Other People’s Work (OPW). You could make these up all day long, but when it comes to making money, you want to leverage everything you can, as often as you can.

Other People’s Resources

Believe it or not, getting your site listed on a search engine is a form of leverage. You are leveraging the search engines existing user base. I’ll use Google for this example. I’m not sure how many people search Google per day, but it is a brand that people flock to. If you own a website, and you are ranking #1 in your niche, and Google has 1,000,000 that search for your keyword and click your link, you have just leveraged Google’s traffic. The best part is, its 100% free if you know how to optimize your website to achieve those results.

One method I use for building this site’s readership is to leverage Amazon’s massive user base. If you came here via one of the free Kindle books listed on Amazon, you have just seen the power of leverage at work. Those books aren’t anything special, which is why I give them away free every month for the full five days allowed by Amazon. The books usually get several thousand downloads, which sends a sudden and expected flood of traffic my way. My goal then becomes to capture as many email addresses as I can in order to grow my website. Can you think of something that you can publish on Kindle to give away for free, in order to leverage Amazon’s customer base?

Other People’s Money

The power to leverage other people’s money can be a huge advantage if used correctly. You are likely leveraging someone else’s money right now without even knowing it.

  • Car Loans
  • Mortgage
  • Credit Cards
  • Personal Loans

Most people don’t buy cars or houses with 100% cash. The purchase usually requires a loan of some type, which has to be made with someone else’s money. They basically provide the cash for your purchase, you get the benefit of driving the car or living in the house, and you pay them back over time. This type of leverage allows you to acquire things much faster than if you had to save up for them yourself. The same concept applies to credit cards and loans as well.

Leveraging Influence

I’m willing to bet that you clicked the link above. Why am I so sure? Because I told you to. I was leveraging my influence. When people are interested in what you have to say, you gain a small bit of power over them. The power of influence. Some people use this power for good and others for evil. In this example, I used my power for good, like a super hero. I created a win-win-win situation for all parties. Let’s look at what happened when I leveraged my influence to get you to click that link:

  • If you bought the book, Mark Hughes wins by making a sale.
  • If you bought the book, you win by adding a valuable resource to your library.
  • If you bought the book, I win by earning a commission on the sale.

When you use the power of influence to benefit all parties, your power of influence grows, which means the amount of leverage you have grows. When you use your powers for evil, your influence over people diminishes. I’ll use the above link as an example again.

Mark Hughes isn’t just another internet marketer or person out to sell you a crappy book on shady marketing. He’s the real deal. He is the creator of Half.com, which he sold to eBay 6 months after its creation, for $300,000,000. Yes, over a quarter of a BILLION DOLLARS in six months. He’s also work for other major companies as well, heading up many of their marketing efforts. There is a list of those companies in the book, which you will see if you bought it.

Because I pointed you to a resource from a person with a proven record of success and not just some random new product, hopefully my power of influence has grown with you (I promise I’ll only use it for good… mwahahahaha).

Testing Your Influence

I want you to take a simple test. I want you to find out how much influence you have over the people you know and the people that follow you. The test is simple. Ask them to read this post and give you their opinion on it. Wait a few days and see how many of them actually do what you asked. If just one person does it, that means you have at least a little bit of the power. The more people that respond to your request, the more influence you have.
