Glass Will Soon Be Up for Grabs in a Flash-Like Sale - U.S. Adults Will Have Chance to Grab a Pair on April 15

Those dying to get their hands on a pair of Google’s computerized spectacles will soon have a chance to do just that.

Google, in a post on its social network, said it will open up its Google Glass Explorer Program for roughly 24 hours to give U.S. residents a chance to buy a pair of the titanium-framed eyewear before they hit store shelves later this year.

No invitation will be required — any adult living in the U.S. who is willing to spend $1,500 will have a crack at getting Glass for themselves on April 15 beginning at 9 a.m. EST. The number of spots in the Explorer program is limited, so those wanting to take part will likely need to jump online at 9 a.m. or shortly after to be admitted. Click here for the link to sign up.

“Over the past several months, we’ve been trying out different ways to expand the Explorer program,” Google said in its Google+ post.

“Our Explorers are moms, bakers, surgeons, rockers, and each new Explorer has brought a new perspective that is making Glass better. But every day we get requests from those of you who haven’t found a way into the program yet, and we want your feedback too.”

Although Google did not divulge a reason for the one-day sale, it is being suggested by some news outlets that the technology firm may want to get rid of existing stock as Google gears up for production of a consumer version of Glass.

The last time Google opened up the Explorer program was last October. At that time, the company was looking to increase its 8,000-person Explorer program by as much as one-third.

Those who were chosen to be part of the original group of Explorers were required to pre-order Glass Explorer Edition for $1,500 plus tax and attend a special pick-up experience, in person, in either New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles. The original units began shipping to members of the program last April.

Google officially unveiled the glasses during its I/O conference in the summer of 2012. At that time, the headset, which was controlled by head movements, had video and audio capability and a built-in compass and accelerometer.

Since then, there have been numerous changes to the device, both technically and cosmetically.
