Queen Elizabeth Makes Her Twitter Debut

A royal tweet has never received so much press.

Queen Elizabeth II sent her very first tweet today in front of an audience of 600 guests at the opening of a new exhibit at London’s Science Museum.

“It is a pleasure to open the Information Age exhibition today at the @ScienceMuseum, and I hope people will enjoy visiting. Elizabeth R,” she wrote.

The ‘R,’ according to The Associated Press, stands for, ‘regina,’ which is the Latin word for queen. The Queen always uses the signature, “Elizabeth R” for official documents.

The British Monarchy account immediately tweeted a confirmation that the previous message was indeed from the Queen: “The last tweet was sent personally by The Queen from her official Twitter account @BritishMonarchy #TheQueenTweets.”

Queen Elizabeth’s debut on Twitter, of course, resulted in tens of thousands of retweets and favorites.

But not everyone was buying the Queen’s tweeting prowess, according to the Financial Times. There was some doubt the Queen had typed the tweet herself. While some said it was typed for her and she merely had to tap a button, other said she just pretended to send it by touching the screen of the tablet provided while someone else sent the message at the exact same moment.
