Facebook Launches Search Function for All Public Posts
Facebook is gearing up to challenge arch-rival Twitter, and possibly even Google, with the launch of Search FYI, a function enabling members to search the more than two trillion monthly posts on the social network.
Search FYI will only surface public posts as well as posts that have been shared with you.
“With over 1.5 billion searches per day and over two trillion posts in our index, search is an important, long-term effort at Facebook,” vice-president of search Tom Stocky said in a blog post.
“When something happens in the world, people often turn to Facebook to see how their friends and family are reacting. Today, we’re updating Facebook Search so that in addition to friends and family, you can find out what the world is saying about topics that matter to you.”
The new search feature, which is available initially to English speaking iOS, Android and desktop users in the U.S., can be accessed via a search bar on the network’s website and mobile app.
Now, when you type into the search box, Facebook will offer up personalized search suggestions, enabling you to follow popular stories in real-time.
“When you search, you’ll now see the most recent, relevant public posts along with posts from your friends,” Stocky said. “Search results are organized to help you cut through the noise and quickly understand what the world is saying about a topic in the moment. You also can pull-to-refresh and see the latest public posts.”
With a tap, you can find public posts about a link, as well as read popular quotes and phrases.
Search FYI is still in test mode and will be updated and improved as Facebook receives feedback from users.
