Tesla Unveils $35,000 Model 3 - Specs, Appearance of Electric Car Impressive
They did not know what the car would look like, but that did not stop 134,000 people from shelling out a $1,000 deposit to reserve a Tesla Model 3.
Tesla finally unveiled the electric car just before midnight (EST) Thursday night at a glitzy event in Hawthorne, California, finally revealing what all the buzz was about.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to the stage to extol the virtues of the new vehicle, explaining that all of its previous models were necessary steps to get to the Model 3 — a car that combines function and safety with class at an affordable price.
“The Model 3 is going to be an incredibly safe car. It will be 5-star in every category,” Musk said on stage at the event.
“And even the base Model 3 will do zero to 60 miles an hour or zero to 100 kilometers an hour in less than six seconds. At Tesla we don’t make slow cars.”
The vehicle, which will offer a minimum range of 215 miles per charge, will start at $35,000 before incentives. Customers can also upgrade to a larger battery.
“You will not be able to buy a better car for $35,000, or even close, even if you get no options,” Musk said.
The Model 3 will come with Tesla’s Autopilot features and high-speed Supercharging and will fit five adults “comfortably.”
The vehicle has front and rear trunks boasting more cargo capacity than any similarly sized gas-run cars on the market. Musk added that a seven-foot surfboard will fit inside the Model 3.
Telsa has upped the number of its high-speed charging stations to 3,708 and that will rise to 7,200 in 2017. Slower destination chargers, meanwhile will skyrocket from 3,689 to 15,000.

One nice thing about electric cars is they’re basically multi-fuel cars, since electricity can be generated in a variety of ways. This gives cars the flexibility to use whatever fuel is most available. Presumably you could also construct your own solar charging array so you could operate independently of utilities.
In fact, if the car’s roof, hood and trunk lid were covered in high efficiency solar panels, you might not even need to plug it in.
Taking that a step further, if motor homes were solar electric, you could arrive at a place, stay long enough for the solar panels on the roof to recharge the batteries, and then move on. Not having to pay for fuel would make the RV lifestyle a lot more affordable.
