Jeep Hackers Able to Make Vehicle Swerve, Accelerate and Slam on Brakes

Hacking just reached a whole new level of scary.

Hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, in an experiment last year, successfully hacked a Jeep Cherokee’s in-car computer system, taking control of the vehicle’s windshield wipers and stereo, not to mention turning off the vehicle’s engine. They were even able to take control of the vehicle, but only if when was driving five mph.

What they accomplished resulted in Fiat Chrysler recalling 1.4 million vehicles.

This year, the pair accomplished far more. Using the same 2014 model, they were able to make the vehicle speed up and slam on the brakes as well as turn suddenly while driving at a high rate of speed.

In a video presented at the Black Hat summit in Las Vegas this week, the security researchers were shown connecting their laptop directly to the jeep’s computer system. They were then able to make the Jeep swerve across the road before ending up in the ditch.

“We tricked the car into thinking that we were the computer telling it to steer,” Valasek says.

While Miller and Valasek say Fiat Chrysler should be worried about the vulnerability, the company insists such attacks cannot be carried out remotely because, after last year’s recall, the flaw was patched.
