Consumer Reports Advises Against Buying New MacBook Pro

For the very first time, a laptop from Apple is not being recommended by Consumer Reports.

The new line of MacBook Pros, launched this fall by Apple, rate well when it comes to display quality and performance, Consumer Reports said in its newly released review but, the battery life, well … it sucks.

During its testing of three new MacBook Pros, Consumer Reports found the models “varied dramatically from one trial to another.” Due to that discrepancy, the laptops did not to receive a ‘recommended rating.’

“The MacBook Pro battery life results were highly inconsistent from one trial to the next,” reads a Consumer Reports blog post. “For instance, in a series of three consecutive tests, the 13-inch model with the Touch Bar ran for 16 hours in the first trial, 12.75 hours in the second, and just 3.75 hours in the third. The 13-inch model without the Touch Bar worked for 19.5 hours in one trial but only 4.5 hours in the next. And the numbers for the 15-inch laptop ranged from 18.5 down to 8 hours. Those were just a few of the results; we tested battery life on these laptops repeatedly.”

A laptop’s battery life should not vary by more than five percent from test to test, Consumer Reports said.

MacBook have always, in the past, scored well on Consumer Reports tests. Battery life on past Apple laptops has in many cases been even better than the manufacturer’s claim.
