Commenting on the report, an analyst from Reports team said: The product bundling strategy is increasingly gaining popularity as companies try to overcome expenses such as acquisition-related costs. This strategy can significantly increase profits over the time. In product bundling, multiple products are packaged together and sold as a single solution. Needles, surgical sets, and trays containing short PIVCs are some of the products sold through this strategy. Vendors also use this strategy to market and sell kits comprising catheters, needles, and other related accessories. These bundled products help surgeons to perform procedures simply and in an organized manner. This strategy is a gaining popularity in the healthcare sector as it allows vendors to sell multiple products together. This also helps to reduce product compatibility complications and allows hospitals and clinics to obtain multiple medical products from a single manufacturer.

According to the report, NSIs are the major cause of the blood-borne diseases among the healthcare workers around the world. Due to unsafe injection practices, annually three million healthcare workers are exposed to blood-borne infectious diseases. Various studies conducted in different hospitals show that half of the injuries occur during the needle use among which, more than 30% are re-used needles, while 25% injuries occur during needle disposal and only 25% of the injured healthcare workers report to appropriate authorities. The rising incidences of needle stick injuries have caused huge spread awareness not only among the governments of the countries but also among the healthcare professionals. Various training sessions are being conducted at regular intervals to aware and educate the nurses and mandating the use of non-ported short PIVC, which is a mostly preferred device for improving safety. The hygiene consciousness for safe disposal of needles to control waste management is also rising, necessitating safety injection practices, which will further raise the demand for non-ported short-PIVC.

Further, the report states that the global short PIVC market is characterized by the presence of many players. For instance, C.R Bard and Becton Dickenson are few leading players in the market that have a competitive advantage over other players. Also, these companies have huge distribution channels and contracts with all the major leading hospitals and health centers, which increases the competition in the market for emerging as well as new entrants in the market. C.R Bard has already established training centers to provide support to its customers besides increasing brand value. This will further increase the brand loyalty of customers. In addition, vendors are currently finding it difficult to remain competitive in the market because of the lack of product differentiation. Since the features and functionalities of various products are similar in nature, most healthcare centers and physicians tend to opt for products based on the familiarity with a specific brand name. For instance, the short PIVCs can be classified only into two types; ported and non-ported. In addition, non-ported is segmented into winged and straight. However, all the products are almost similar in terms of functionality and other features. Hence, it is critical for manufacturers to develop a technologically-advanced product line to achieve product differentiation. Thus, vendors need to be aware of the technological advancements and value-added features that can be added to short PIVCs to provide better drug delivery for patients. Therefore, the intense competition coupled with the lack of product differentiation is hampering the growth of the global market.

About Short PIVC

A short peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) is a long, thin tube that is used to inject fluid or medication directly into a vein or to draw blood samples for testing. A needle is inserted and subsequently removed from a peripheral vein (i.e., veins found in the arms, hands, legs, or feet), leaving a small tube (the cannula) at the insertion site. The catheter is then attached to the patient’s arm with the help of adhesive tape. Peripheral catheters are made of non-irritant and medical-grade materials like polyurethane or silicone. These advanced models have additional safety features to prevent needlestick injuries in hospital Intensive Care Units (ICUs).
