Microsoft Cuts Windows 7, Windows 8 Support for New PCs
Say goodbye to Windows 7 if you have a new PC.
Microsoft’s latest update rolled out this week without support for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 on newer hardware. Anyone attempting to update either software on their newer PCs received an error message that read: “Unsupported Hardware. Your PC uses a processor that isn’t supported on this version of Windows and you won’t receive updates.”
Computers with 7th-generation Intel processors (“Kaby Lake”), which went on sale late last year and machines with AMD Ryzen (“Bristol Ridge”) chips, which are just now coming out, are impacted.
PC owners should not be surprised, however. The writing has been on the wall for some time. Microsoft in October discontinued the sale of PCs running Windows 7 Professional and Windows 8.1 and announced last January upcoming changes in its support policy.
Windows 7 has been Microsoft’s most popular browser for years. As of February, the market share of computers still running Windows 7 sat at a whopping 48.41 percent, while Windows 10 holds just 25.19 percent of the market. Windows 8.1 came in third with 6.87 percent behind Windows XP which still had a 8.45 percent share. Windows 8 had a 1.65 percent share.
Windows 8.1 has never really caught on, despite the fact that it has been around since October 2013 and addressed many of users’ concerns with Windows 8. Windows 10, which has been around for coming up on two years, saw a lot of Windows XP and Windows 8 users make the switch. However, Windows 7 users continue to be the biggest holdouts to Microsoft’s most recent software.
Microsoft is continuing to do all it can to push Windows 10 adoption rates up. In January, the company announced it was offering free upgrades to all customers with Windows subscriptions through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program.
