Facebook Meme Could Put Your Online Security at Risk

A meme that has gone viral on Facebook over the past few days may reveal more of your personal information than you realize, security experts warn.

The meme, dubbed ’10 Concerts I’ve Been To, One is a Lie’ seems like an amusing distraction. You simply list 10 concerts, nine of which you’ve actually been to and one that you have not. Your friends then try to guess the phony concert on your list.

But, according to a report from The New York Times, cyber-security experts are calling the ’10 Concerts I’ve Been To’ list, and others like it, a mid-level threat to your online privacy. The problem with such lists is that they not only expose information about you — but they could potentially reveal answers to your security questions on other sites. It is not unusual for your bank to ask security questions such as the name of your favorite song or band or even the name the first concert you attended.

The other risk is that such lists reveal a lot of information about you — everything from your background and age to musical preferences and religious affiliation. That type of information is solid gold to Internet marketers seeking the perfect audience for their products.

“You are expressing things about you, maybe in more subtle ways than you might think,” executive director of the National Security Alliance Michael Kaiser said in an interview with The Times. “People always have to have their eyes wide open when they’re on the internet. It’s the way of the world.”
