Smart Jean Jacket By Google and Levi’s Goes on Sale This Week

If you’re a denim jacket fan and a Smartphone junkie, then Google’s latest invention will be right up your alley.

The company’s Advanced Technology and Projects group (ATAP) has teamed up with blue jean king Levi’s to produce a technology-enhanced denim jacket that gives the wearer the ability to connect to a number of services, such as music or maps, directly from the garment.

The Levi’s Commuter Trucker Jacket is the first garment developed by Jacquard, Google ATAP’s connected apparel platform that gives fashion designers and apparel manufacturers the ability to integrate connectivity and interactivity into particular garments.

“We’re excited for Jacquard to be out in the world, and look forward to seeing how connectivity and interactivity can dress up the rest of your closet,” engineering director and technical project lead of Jacquard Dr. Ivan Poupyrev said in a blog post.

Project Jacquard technology embeds weave touch and gesture interactivity into any material, making it possible to transform clothes and furniture into interactive surfaces. In the case of the Commuter Trucker Jacket, wearers, by touching their sleeves, can wirelessly access their phones and favorite mobile apps to adjust music volume or silence a phone call.

“The gestures on the jacket cuff are fully re-configurable: using the Jacquard app you can assign gestures to invoke different digital abilities that were designed specifically for an on-the-go lifestyle,” Poupyrev said.

The jacket, which can be washed once the snap tag is removed, is available for purchase Wednesday in select stores. It will be available next week in the U.S. online at www.levi.com and at select Levi’s stores.
