Stevie Wonder Files for Divorce, seeks Joint custody
Legendary singer Stevie Wonder has filed for divorce with wife for 11 years Kia Millard. The reason for divorce has been cited as “irreconcilable differences”. The blind singer separated with his wife in 2009, whom he dedicated his 2003 single hit, Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours). Wonder filed the divorce papers with his legal name Steveland Morris and he signed them with two finger prints. However, the singer and his fashion designer wife Kai have sought for joint custody of the two children Kailand 10, and Mandla 7. Stevie has also agreed to pay the child support to Kia millard.
Stevie Wonder has hired the services of heavy weight divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who has fought divorce cases for celebrities like Angelina Jolie.
Stevie Wonder and his wife Kia lives in California and the assumptions are that the case is filed in the state to utilize the California’s community property law. According to community property law, the assets earned during the period of marriage are split in equal shares between the spouses. However, the couple can negotiate a common settlement agreement. If this is not done, the property is equally split between the two. Community property law is applicable to funds that were earned during the period when the couple were living together, and wanted to stay married. But, Stevie and Kia separated in 2009, so any assets they earned during the last 3 years will not come under hammer.
This is the second divorce of Stevie Wonder. He was previously married to Syreeta Wright in 1970. But the marriage was short lived and the singer filed for divorce in 1972.
The spokesman of the singer said: “This is a sad conclusion to a chapter in his life but he and Kai part as friends and share many wonderful memories as well as two beautiful children.”
