More Than 4 Million Fake Brand Name Condoms Confiscated in China

A factory producing fake brand-name condoms in China was busted on after police found clues on the internet and raided the workshop.

 

Police officers finished an initial investigation on May 15, saying they had confiscated more than 2 million fake condoms, labeled Jissbon, Durex, and Contex in the factory. The knock-offs are priced at 16 cents each and cost less than four cents to produce.

 

Police noticed brand name condoms being sold online in February at “unreasonably low prices,” according to state-run China Daily. They bought some and found they were fake, though it’s unspecified how exactly they found that out.

 

The production of these fake condoms was so simple that the workshop could produce 20,000 a day and it was only 50 square meters.

 

In the entire operation, which included busting two other workshops, police arrested 37 suspects and seized more than 4 million fake condoms.

 

These condoms have real life consequences. Ghana found more than 1 million of them from China in April and confiscated them, declaring a “major public health issue.”

 

“When we tested these condoms, we found that they are poor quality, can burst in the course of sexual activity, and have holes which expose the users to unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease,” said Thomas Amedzro, head of drug enforcement at the FDA.

“This is a huge, huge problem,” said Faustina Fynn-Nyame, director of Marie Stopes International in Ghana. “There will be a lot of unintended pregnancies as a result of this, and that means maternal mortality and unsafe abortion.
