The Hoax That Has Killed Thousands

Of all the propaganda stunts the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has created over the years to persecute Falun Gong, perhaps the most damaging is the self-immolation hoax.
In January 2001, Chinese media broadcast footage of five people, supposedly Falun Gong practitioners, who set themselves on fire in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Within weeks the event was found to be a hoax, staged in order to create public support for the CCP’s mass imprisonment, torture, and killing of Falun Gong practitioners.
It worked. Countless Chinese citizens saw the gruesome images, believed the self-immolators were real Falun Gong practitioners, and developed disgust and hatred toward the practice. They had no access to non-CCP media, so they had no way to learn of the deception.
To those who could access the evidence, it was clear that dozens of things didn’t add up, such as the fact that one of the “practitioners” in the video was doing the basic Falun Gong meditation position incorrectly and shouting things that had nothing to do with Falun Gong.
The Washington Post also reported evidence that two of the self-immolators were not Falun Gong practitioners, according to human rights website Minghui.org.
In fact, those who had studied or read about Falun Gong knew all along that none of the five people could have been real practitioners.
Falun Gong is an ancient spiritual practice based on truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance. Its teachings strictly forbid killing and suicide.
No real Falun Gong practitioner would attempt to burn himself to death. The CCP’s self-immolation story was therefore impossible.
Ever since the incident was broadcast over 13 years ago, practitioners have been trying to undo its devastating effects by explaining the facts to as many people as possible. In the meantime it has been more destructive than any real fire, as the CCP has used the videos to justify a truly horrific persecution.
“The resulting apathy or hostility toward Falun Gong in China has greatly facilitated the regime’s attempt to eradicate the practice, and is a primary cause for the tens of thousands of reports of abuse and torture,” Minghui.org states.
