Chinese Officials Learn the Hard Way: What Goes Around, Comes Around
Truthfulness, compassion, and tolerance are the three guiding principles of Falun Gong, the meditation discipline that has been severely persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for 16 years.
If CCP officials had paid more attention to these principles, they might have avoided the predicament they are in now. The same officials who spent so many years persecuting innocent people are now being persecuted themselves.
The CCP has a long history of launching persecutions against various groups of citizens in order to maintain its own political power. In 1999, then-Party leader Jiang Zemin started a nationwide campaign to arrest, torture, kill, and publicly slander Falun Gong practitioners.
Falun Gong practitioners adhere to strict nonviolence, so instead of fighting back, they have been peacefully calling for an end to the persecution and raising global awareness of it. They have also tried to remind CCP officials about another universal principle: good deeds are rewarded, and bad deeds bring retribution.
This principle, it seems, has finally taken effect.
The CCP is now led by Jiang’s political rival, Xi Jinping, and Xi has launched his own nationwide campaign—this time targeting Jiang’s supporters.
The campaign has lasted over two years. Xi’s authorities have investigated, punished, or arrested thousands of individuals, including 100 high-ranking officials, according to Epoch Times.
On the surface, Xi’s campaign is meant to weed out corrupt officials. However, it is aimed largely at Jiang’s supporters, the very ones who brought about the persecution of Falun Gong.
Xi is not directly punishing them for persecuting Falun Gong, but has instead found other reasons to discipline them. Since most of them have extensive criminal backgrounds, he has plenty of reasons to choose from.
For example, Zhou Yongkang, former Chinese security czar and one of Jiang’s closest allies, played a leading role in carrying out the persecution, according to Epoch Times. Zhou has now been sentenced to life in prison on various corruption charges, such as bribery, Epoch Times reported.
Despite all this, some CCP officials continue to oppress Falun Gong and spread anti-Falun Gong propaganda.
Not all of them are still doing it, though. Over the years, many officials have changed their minds, stopped taking part in the persecution, and even quit the Party, not wanting to bear any responsibility for its crimes against humanity.
