Wayside St. Joseph Chapel a 'labor of love'

The following article, by Barbara Watkins, appears in this week’s edition of the St. Louis Review:

Many Catholic families have a religious statue on display in their home and a crucifix on the wall. But one family in South St. Louis County has gone a step further. Jim and Pat Dolde of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish in Oakville have built a chapel in their yard.

The small wooden building is dedicated to “Our Friend and Helper, St. Joseph,” explained Jim Dolde, a retired optician who’s quite an accomplished carpenter. His wife of 46 years, Pat, is a retired banker, and the couple enjoys taking trips.

Their chapel, modeled on the wayside chapels that the Doldes saw during a 2010 trip to Door County, Wis., sits on their 1-plus acre lot near their private lane off Ringer Road.

The Door County chapels were built by Belgian immigrants in the 1800s. “We were so moved by these chapels that the decision was made to live our faith and build our own,” he said. “We truly believe things happen for a reason. We built this based on ‘Why not honor our faith?’”

It took Dolde a month to build the chapel, with help from his brother. The chapel is 6 feet by 5 feet, with three stained-glass windows, a kneeler and a small altar table with a statue of St. Joseph.

Dolde called the chapel a labor of love.
