Cleanup, recovery are team effort for parishioners, agencies

Immediately after two tornadoes hit the St. Louis area on Good Friday evening, the archdiocese’s Emergency Response Committee was mobilized.
Archbishop Robert J. Carlson formed the committee, which includes leadership of the archdiocesan curia, to respond to emergency situations, such as natural disasters, and provide support to parishes and their communities as they recover.
The National Weather Service confirmed that two tornadoes hit an area spanning from New Melle in St. Charles County to Granite City, Ill. The first tornado was an EF1, which centered in the New Melle area. The other, rated an EF4, primarily affected North St. Louis County, the extreme northern part of St. Louis City and Madison County, Ill. The National Weather Service reported that the EF4 tornado, which packed winds of 166-200 miles per hour, is the strongest that has occurred in St. Louis County since 1967.
“I express my sympathy to all those who were hurt during the Good Friday tornadoes or who lost property,” said Archbishop Carlson. “It was certainly a blessing that no one was killed in these violent storms. Hopefully all those who experienced loss because of the storms will take comfort in the presence of Christ during this special time at Easter.”
David Mueckl, archdiocesan chief operating officer and chairman of the Emergency Response Committee, said that the archdiocese was first in contact with Father Richard Bockskopf, pastor of Holy Spirit Parish in Maryland Heights, which lost its 40-foot steeple while parishioners were attending a Good Friday liturgy that evening.
