Holy Spirit Catholic Church Hit by Storm - Parishioners Celebrate Easter in Damaged Church
St. Louis, MO – When the tornados ripped through Maryland Heights during Good Friday service, Father Joe Classen, associate pastor of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, saw the church’s 40-foot steeple fly by one of the windows of the parish. After the service ended, and he and Father Richard Bockskopf, the pastor, saw that everyone attending was safe, they walked out into their neighborhood and saw the devastation.
Many Catholics who live nearby whose homes were damaged by the storm will attend Easter Masses this weekend at Holy Spirit. During the Easter Vigil, the sacraments of Christian initiation will be celebrated. At least five men and women will be baptized and/or confirmed and receive First Holy Communion in the Catholic Church.
The Mass is considered to be the first celebration of Easter, which marks when Jesus rose from the dead. The service begins in darkness, when a fire is blessed, symbolizing the radiance of the Risen Christ dispelling the darkness of sin and death. Those gathered will then light candles, reminding us that Christ is our light.
Easter Sunday is the most important day in Catholicism. The faithful believe Easter is the day Jesus rose from the dead, and by His resurrection He has restored life. Easter marks the end of Lent, the 40 days during which Catholics prayed and fasted as they remembered the events that lead to the crucifixion and redemption of Christ.
