Practice of abstaining from meat has interesting history

Q. Why is it that we abstain from meat on the Fridays of Lent, but not from fish or eggs? How was this determined?

A: The very first command God gave the human race was to abstain. I’m referring to God’s command to Adam not to eat the fruit of the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Since that command was broken, man fell into a state of sin. Consequently, sacrifice became part of our human condition as the necessary antidote to sin. That’s why the law given by God to Moses contains all the sundry regulations about what foods, and combinations of foods, were and were not kosher, or “clean,” and thus could be eaten or not eaten.

Our Christian practice with regard to eating began as a close imitation of the Jews. We never concerned ourselves with the laws of kosher foods because Christ abrogated them (Mark 7:17-23, Acts 10:9-16), but we did embrace the discipline of fasting as an atonement for sins. Christ commanded this (Matthew 9:15), and He practiced it Himself. In apostolic times there was no distinction between fasting (denying oneself all food) and abstinence (denying oneself certain foods).

In those days, Catholics fasted twice a week, Wednesdays and Fridays, because those were the days of Jesus’ betrayal and death. In addition, there were seasonal observances. It was a very strict fast. The healthy consumed nothing. Since that time, fasting has become less and less stringent. First we went from two days a week to one. Next, the fast was eased by allowing small snacks throughout the day.
