Abortion Foes to Say Exorcism Prayers Outside Clinic

SUPPORTERS OF 40 DAYS FOR LIFE CAMPAIGN WILL RALLY AT CLINIC IN SOUTHWEST OHIO

Anti-abortion activists plan to say prayers of exorcism outside an abortion clinic in Kettering, Ohio [link].

The Dayton Daily News reports the chancellor of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cincinnati has given permission for priests to read an exorcism prayer at a rally Sunday outside the Women’s Med Center. This will take place during a 2pm rally outside the Women’s Med Center — the Miami Valley’s only abortion clinic.

Participants will be invited to recite a prayer that reads, in part: “Seize the dragon, the ancient serpent, which is the devil and Satan, bind him and cast him into the bottomless pit, that he may no longer seduce the nations.”

Father Earl Fernandes, dean of the Athenaeum of Ohio seminary in Cincinnati, told the press, “This [prayer] is said over a place that’s infested with the evil spirit, to remove any evil that might happen to be there.”

Father Fernandes added that the prayer to be read by priests is a minor exorcism in the Roman Catholic tradition, meant to “turn people away from sin and toward the Holy Spirit.”

An organizer of the group planning the vigil says the prayers are designed to drive evil out of a place, as opposed to a person.

The clinic is closed Sundays.

A similar vigil took place outside an abortion clinic in Rockford, Ill., back in 2009. Some said the prayers led to a decision to close the clinic, which had been cited for health and safety violations.
