Descendant of Darwin Fights for the Christian Faith

“From my father’s side of the family, the Darwin-Keynes side, I was getting a different influence: highly rational, scientific, secular, humanist,” she says. “My father is an academic neuroscientist, and I absorbed the view that all phenomena are the product of the material brain. I gradually drifted into agnosticism.”

Catholic apologist Laura Keynes has an interesting family background. Her family tree includes notable figures Charles Darwin (her great-great-great-grandfather) and economist John Maynard Keynes (her great-great-uncle). Growing up, that side of the family had an influence that was, in her words, “highly rational, scientific, secular, humanist.”

While she was in her 20s, the God debate made a splash in Britain, launched by Richard Dawkins and other fundamental atheists. But after exploring both sides, rather than continue her slide toward atheism (a direction she says she was heading), she found herself a Catholic. Today she is an apologist and has joined Britain’s Catholic Voices.
