The Holy Belt of the Virgin, a Relic of the Assumption

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

It has often been adduced as proof of the early Church’s belief in the Assumption that no one has ever claimed to have a relic of the Virgin Mary’s body. However, the cathedral of the Italian city of Prato, less than 12 miles from Florence, preserves to this day a famous relic associated with the Assumption, a belt venerated as that of the Virgin Mary, given by Her to the Apostle Thomas.
The Belt seen in its reliquary with the cover removed.

According to a very ancient legend, (attested e.g. by St. John Damascene in the 8th century, among others,) when it came time for the Virgin Mary’s earthly life to end, all of the Apostles were miraculously brought to Jerusalem to be present for Her death; St. Thomas, however, was late (again!). When She had died, they laid Her body to rest in a tomb in the garden of Gethsemani, outside the city; three days later, St. Thomas arrived in Jerusalem, and wished to venerate the body. On opening the tomb, the Apostles discovered that it was nowhere to be found, and a sweet odor came forth, confirming that “Whom once it pleased to take the flesh from the Virgin Mary, and become a man, and be born (of Her)… and who after birth preserved Her virginity incorrupt, it also pleased, after Her passing, to honor Her immaculate body … by translating (it to Heaven) before the common and universal resurrection.”

There are variations to this legend, as is often the case. According to one version, the other eleven Apostles believed in the Assumption because angelic music played in the air over the tomb on the day of the burial, and for three days after; St. Thomas, arriving after the music had ceased, refused to believe them until the tomb was opened and the absence of the body confirmed. According to another version, Thomas already knew and believed in the Assumption before coming to Jerusalem, and brought the others to the tomb to show them that the body of the Virgin was gone; after which, they heard all the music together. A further addition to the story says that flowers were growing out of the stone sarcophagus in which She had been laid, and were the source of the sweet odor coming out of the tomb.

The Madona of the Belt, by Franesco d’Antonio di Bartolommeo, early 15th century.

There are likewise variations in the legend of the belt which the Virgin then gave to St. Thomas. One says that She Herself, knowing well of Thomas’ propensity to doubt, appeared above the empty tomb as the Apostles stood around it, and then removed Her belt and gave it to him as an enduring proof of the Assumption, just as Her Son had allowed him to place his finger in the wound in His side. But another version, following the story that Thomas had believed in the Assumption before going to the tomb, appeared to him and gave him the belt as a reward for his faith.

The altar of the chapel where the Holy Belt is now kept in Prato Cathedral. On the wall behind it can be seen the tabernacle where it kept.

The legend goes on to say that it remained in the Holy Land until the 12th century, when a merchant from Prato, while visiting the Holy Land, married the daughter of the priest who held it in custody. The merchant and his new wife brought the relic back with them to Italy; on the death of the former, it was given to the city’s cathedral. After a canon from Prato’s historical rival, nearby Pistoia, attempted to steal the relic in 1312, a new chapel was built in the Duomo to keep it safe, where it remains to this day. It is exposed for the veneration of the faithful five times a year, on Easter, on May 1st, on the Assumption and Nativity of the Virgin, and on Christmas Day. A special pulpit was built on the outside of Prato cathedral for these occasions by Donatello in the 1430s, since the crowds of pilgrims who came to see it were frequently too large to fit within the cathedral itself.

The Donatello Pulpit on the outside of Prato Cathedral
Bishop Gastone Simoni of Prato (now retired) brings the Holy Belt out onto the pulpit to be venerated by the faithful.

In the year 1351, the city of Prato became part of the territory of the Republic of Florence. From that point, representations of St. Thomas with the belt become a common feature of Florentine paintings of the Assumption, and on the strength of Florentine influence on the Renaissance generally, the motif passed first to the rest of Italy, and thence to other parts of Europe.

Several references to the various traditions described appear in one of the most beautiful examples of this motif, the Oddi Altarpiece by the great Raphael Sanzio; it was painted in 1502-3, when the artist was only 19 years old, and is now kept in the Painting Gallery of the Vatican Museums.

In the upper part of the image, the Virgin is crowned by Christ, and surrounded by angels, four of whom are playing musical instruments. In the lower part, the Apostles are gathered around the tomb, and some of them are looking up and listening to the music. St. Thomas’ importance to the story is emphasized by fact that he is standing in the middle of the group, with his tilted back in a perspective that is difficult for any artist to capture properly well, and spatially isolated from the other eleven Apostles. The tomb of the Virgin is filled with flowers growing out of the stone. Standing in as the model for one of the Apostles on the far right is Raphael himself, wearing black and looking straight out at the viewer.

Complete hogwash comparable to the parable of Satan’s Claws. I mean Santa Claus, you know, the pedophiles club.

Good Grief!! Give me a break!! The bible talks about Jesus’ brothers. Mary was a woman that gave birth to the Christ. Then she went on to have other children by her husband Joseph. That was well after Jesus was born though. where do they come of with this stuff!!!?

Some very old editions of DC Comics. “We don’t need no stinking Bible!” You really have to wonder about a bunch of guys, in the first place, who dress like they’re going treak-or-treating year around…

ROFLIMAFO Something originating from the 8th century is not “a very ancient legend” It’s not even ancient. A bronze age hillfort is ancient. The Egyptian pyramids are ancient. Prehistoric cave paintings are ‘very ancient’. not some iffy artifact claimed by Christianity as a legend in the 8th century ce. Especially when Mary originates from the ancient Egyptian allegorical story of Isis the mother of Horus.

There was an actual Isis Meri, the Egyptian pharaoh Cleopatra/Isis Meri, which means ‘royal virgin’ (unmarried young women), who gave birth to the only begotten son of god, the Roman emperor Julius Ceasar. Their son was given the Greek name Iesous, because she was from the Greek Ptolemy family. But most people know him by his nick name Ceasarian, born c 40bce. Titled ‘lamb of god’, ‘in the image of god’, ‘heir to the kingdom of god’. Fled into exile, the wilderness when his mother killed herself. And was eventually captured and crucified as a traitor to Rome on the orders of his rival, the older adopted son of Ceasar, Roman emperor Octavian/Augustus. Perfect timing.

It is beyond my wildest thoughts how 1.5 billion people can believe this pagan mishmash regurgitated from a group of pedophiles walking around in skirts after stealing the Names of God and applying them to themselves. Calling a sin filled human “Holy Father” is the greatest blastphmy.

Can anyone explain why there are fly’s painted on the ceiling in the church building in Rome?
Could it be from Egypt? They worshiped fly’s in Egypt.

Interesting article, yet consider so many negative responses from twisted minds insulting God’s mother for what possible gain? A hotter place in hell?

As the Book of LUKE clearly states, Christ was born in a quantum flash of light that aroused the curiosity of nearby shepherds. Christ’s extraordinary birth (in a flash of light) left St. Mary’s perpetual virginity intact. Christ merely exited St. Mary’s womb and materialized in her arms. Christ was able to do that because he is God.

Shortly after giving delivery, St. Mary was already well enough to receive visitors — the shepherds and the Magi. The reason St. Mary healed from childbirth so quickly is because she experienced no atypical natal trauma.

There are many dumb things people can do, but insulting the pure and innocent Mother of God is the absolute dumbest.

        Anonymous,

Why does the popes big building, the one with the dome ceiling, have fly’s painted on it ?

Do you worship fly’s as well? Rome seem to worship anything it can find laying around here and there. You worship old dead toes, bones, big images that are suppose to be saints, is there any limit to what you folks will do?

No one is insulting mary, just the blastphmy of raising her to a god.
Rome will again put to death those that will not fall and worship at her feet. Did you know that martyrdom by hand of Rome is God’s way of giving that person the Spiritual Metal of Honor?

Mary remained a perpetual Virgin all her life. She took a vow of virginity during her years in the Jewish temple as a young girl. Joseph, her husband, was also moved by God to make a vow of virginity at the age of 12. Together, Joseph and Mary faithfully observed these vows throughout all their life. This is according to credible Catholic mystics and is in accordance with the AUTHENTIC interpretation of Scripture and Tradition which has been faithfully maintained and clarified over the course of 2,000 years.

Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit without the aid of a man. Jesus did NOT have any brothers. In the ancient semitic languages of the day, the were no words for relatives of a more distant relation such as “cousin, uncle, niece,” etc. The references which would seem to suggest Jesus brothers are in fact referring to relatives of a more distant character. In other instances, they refer to spiritual fraternity. It is true even of today that Christians often refer to each other as brother or sister without actually being related. It may also be said that since Mary is the Mother of Jesus, she is therefore the SPIRITUAL Mother of all those whom Jesus has redeemed; namely, all Christians. Hence, she remains a Virgin. Scripture is not to be twisted out of its proper and historical context. Even St. Peter himself, in the Bible, warned about people who twist the Scriptures “to their own destruction”. Don’t be one of them.

Mary was assumed body and soul into Heaven because of her Immaculate purity, her freedom from sin and from all evil. She is the Queen and Mistress of all Christians and I am most pleased to see the above article posted in honor of her glorious Assumption.

The mysteries of Holy Faith, revealed by Jesus and entrusted to the Apostles on whom the Roman Catholic Church was founded, are so magnificent and so wonderful that no human mind could ever devise such truths or such riches.

I must caution all those who would dare call themselves Christians reading this article. Nothing pains Jesus more in today’s world than the blasphemy and indifference shown to His Holy Mother. He who says “I love Jesus” but hates the Mother of Jesus is a LIAR!

      • Truthseeker

        Mary’s servant,

I showed you in Revelation what you are involved it. It is mysteries alright, The Babylonian mystery religion. That also had a mother and son actually it was nimrod and his mother, she also was called queen of heaven.

Christ came to explain not to hide like you folks do with all those ridiculous long words you created out of thin air.

Again, Jesus is a Jew, all Apostles are Jews, the message Christ came to deliver was for the whole House of Israel. So Rome , the gentiles, killed Him and took over and counterfeited His teaching, after, of course they changed every last one.

Why would God turn over His Called out once to gentiles?

Some are fully aware of what is to come, Rome will again wear out the Saints

        • Louis

Truthseeker, no disrespect intended, but you sound like you are out to lunch. Shock therapy might help. Just a suggestion.

It is amazing what moronic comments come about when people comment on others faith. Who can be so certain and arrogant to believe that they know all things. Follow your atheism to it’s final conclusion then come back and tell the rest of us there’s nothing on the other side. Being all knowledgeable it should be an easy feat. We will be waiting for those words of wisdom too bad they will never be heard. memento mori

“It is amazing what moronic comments come about when people comment on others faith. Who can be so certain and arrogant to believe that they know all things.”

I haven’t seen anyone claiming they know all things. Belief based on evidence is not moronic. Denying the evidence in favour of an unsubstantiated 4th century claim that it’s unique and original, is moronic. You don’t have faith, you have a bad case of denial of reality, denial of the evidence, and denial of logic and common sense. And the biggest denial of all is the Abrahamic mono deity was worshipped from antiquity, when in fact the first ever mono deity religion was invented c 1’300 bce by the inbred Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep IV. Israel were runaway Egyptian slaves who reached Palestine c 1’100 bce. It is nowhere near as old as the religions would have everyone believe. They are liars, rotten to the core.

        • Jay

My so called “denial of reality” cost’s me nothing if I am wrong. If you are wrong and find out to late that you denied reality it will cost you everything.

There is a belt but it’s not that fake one. “Put on the whole armour of God”, first is the “belt of truth” which is the Word. If you do not have on the belt of truth then the breastplate falls off, meaning unless you are of the Word then everything else in your doctrine and belief is not sound. If you truly believe then you must also believe “And in the beginning was the Word”. The Holy Bible is the truth and if read properly, you would note that Jesus expressly forbids the worship of Idols, of relics etc. There is absolutely nowhere in the bible does it tell you to worship Mary. Please understand, Mary was a human, just like us, capable of sin and NOT a diety. Your church made her thus, your church sold relics to make millions. You bow to a man on earth (Pope) all expressly forbidden by Jesus. You preach purgatory, you are therefore saying we must go there to work of our sin. Again, you demean Jesus, he died for you so that ALL sin is forgiven. “I will judge the pride of those who refuse the listen to the Word of God” You are in love with Worship, you worship – worship, not Jesus. I am not dissing catholics, trust me, I was a protestant and they are just as bad. Find a church that preaches about Jesus, his Second Coming, that actually talks about the biggest issue a christian must know “Revelation”. “Come out of her my people” You have a choice, worship a cult that tells you only they can intervene for you through saints, Mary, the Pope or worship the true wishes of Jesus. He tells you to speak to him, straight to him in prayer and worship. No man is chosen to intercede between you and your God. Either believe all of the bible or keep picking and choosing the bits that suit you, one leads to the narrow path, the other the wide. You’re choice, your freewill. Try asking Jesus in prayer to him and see what he reveals. Amen
